keith-smudge
Can anyone help with advice! I have obtained 40 acres of winter rape to shoot over. Unfortunately there is very little natural cover to use when building a hide. Can anyone advise me on erecting a hide with a 'roof '. Guest flightline
Welcome to the site Smudger. I mostly use a hide with a roof after reading John Batley`s book (he`s also got a video) and it shows you there. Most shooters don`t use one though. What I do is take 5 poles, and build a "rectangle" in plan with 4 and a "triangle" in plan with the 5th. In plan it will look like a kids version of a house. You sit at the base (which is backed up to a hedge etc) and shoot over the vee in front. Complete the hide with two nets-one for roof and part of sides , the other for the front walls. It`s easier to build than explain. If the back two poles are tall jobs, you can arrange things that you can stand to shoot and still be virtually invisible. If you shoot sitting down you can by lowering the front net. In this case you may find a face mask helpful.
neilbe2
or maybe ask the farmer if he has a couple of bails of straw he could dump on the edge of the crop these make great hides and the birds get used to them cos there always there! :yp:
keith-smudge
:yp: thanks Flightline & Neilbe2. I got the farmer to drop me off some bales of straw and built an ' H ' shape hide giving me 2 shoot lines. I can erect a roof with 1 net across the centre with 2nd net across in front. Everso comfortable as its a good wind break. I'm now concerned that my camo clothing stands out against the straw, do you think its worth the expence of a big net across all the hide and if so where can i get a reasonably priced 20 x 20 net ? Hows this for frustration. One of the fields i shoot backs on to private dwellings not wishing to upset the owners i give this field a miss. Every morning i get in place at daybreak only to watch as wave after wave of birds decend out of the roost and chomp merrily away not 150yds from my hide. Still ive managed to trim a few 34 best so far. By the way Smudge is my spaniels name but as they say if the cap fits. regards Smudge aka Keith. kdubya
if you want material to form a hide (cover) and to match straw bales get to your local builders merchants and get some hessian cloth used as frost protection for bricks same colour as the straw bales and dirt cheap cheers kdubya

Vermin Dropper
You could also try old cd's or the free internet ones hanging from canes or sticks to keep them on the move from that field :yp:
