Dead-Eyed Duck
I have recently acquired a 7g Benjamin Hall percussion (muzzle loader), and am trying to trace any information about the maker. The gun is supposed to be a live pigeon gun - in the olden days there used to be competitions whereby a live pigeon was released from underneath a hat, and the shooter had to kill the pigeon stone dead within a circle. If the pigeon flapped out of the circle then it did not count. Huge bets were place on these competitions, and specialist guns were manufactured. Many did not have the ramrod located underneath the barrel as this added weight and could affect the gun balance. Large bores were used simply to increase the lethality. I have not checked yet but I think that a 7g is good for 21/2 oz (c.75g!) of shot. Now the gun I have is said to have an American maple stock, and certainly it is very light in shade and quite unlike anything I have seen before. The balance is beautiful. Has anyone got any information please - I know that there is a company called Benjamin Hall in Birmingham, but am told that the gun that I have is definitely American... Dead-Eyed Duck
If only I knew how to upload pics, as the gun is certainly unusual. I have a small collection of muzzle loaders to play with - double 20g, double 10g and two double 12g. Oh, and another single 7g that is crude to put it mildly, but great fun to use. Once upon a time my good friend shot out a magpie nest with the 10g, and as we had forgotten to bring wads we used screwed up newspaper instead. The nest was in a large holly bush and the result was that he set the nest on fire!
