BSA Mercury S Pellet Recommendation and Scope Mount

Hi all,

I had noticed the topic placed by SRSPOWER the other day. I'm in the same boat! I've just purchased, in a very nice condition, a specimen of the above. I then immediately purchased a tin of Wasp 5.6mm pellets to try it out. Purchasing that tin was a mistake, the pellets should have been rejected by their Quality Control!

Question 1: Defiant Vintage, anyone got experience of these pellets in these rifles?

Question 2: I would like to fit a scope at a later date but I see that there is no scope mount arrestor hole to prevent scope creep, anyone suggest the recommended way how to mount a scope on this model?

Question 3: I have a Chrono which I would like to put on this rifle, but I think I should wait until I get a reasonable brand of pellet to fire through first. Can anyone tell me what was the original ft/lb for this rifle when it was sold?

I would like this figure to compare my rifle's power against to get some idea of it's internal condition.

Many thanks to those who reply.

I've a local Game Fair coming up shortly this month, 'The 25th. West Midlands Game and Country Fair' at Shughborough, I hope to get my supplies then.

I have a Mercury S-after testing I found that AA Field work as well as can be expected-they may drop into the breach but they are still very accurate. As for fitting a scope-you will need "reach forward" mounts to get the correct eye relief-the mount that would normally be at the muzzle end has to be reversed and fitted at the back.If you search this section you should find a few threads about this gun.

Thanks bruno22rf, never heard of that type of mount before, it's certainly food for thought. The AA Field were one of my choices though I mighy try also the "Marksman" brand of pellet in 5.6mm mode when the supplier gets stock of them.

You might find a better fitting pellet but I would go for quality my friend-AA H&N etc-the AA's were dismissed as soon as I put one in the barrel because they dropped down so far-but after messing around with better fitting jobbies I found the AA were best by far for accuracy. The reach forward mounts are cheapest from Ronnie Sunshines (Ebay item 360825667475) and I am 99.9 certain that you will need them to get the correct eye relief :good:

Thanks Bruno,

I use AA Field in my HW95K .177 and it seems to like them, never had a bad AA pellet yet, unlike the Wasp .22 pellets! Will give Ronnie S. a call today to have a brief natter. With this set-up, will there be any scope creep? Would like to know if possible, the power of your Mercury S assuming it is .22.

Many thanks,

Steve.

P.S.

Sorry to sound a bit "thick" but I've noticed on some topics the initials "PM" being used. Can you enlighten me please?

Hi Steve-pm = private message-just click on a members name and you will see "send me a message". If you buy a mount from RS over the phone then make sure you pay the online price-and I think that postage is free . Best way to prevent scope creep, as no arrestor devices are fitted, is to ensure that the gun is well serviced and running as smooth as possible and also by not using a huge/heavy scope. Mine is the rarer .177-took me years to find a near mint one. Mine was serviced by R&K Stockcraft and will produce sub 10mm/10 shot groups at 25 yards all day long if you bench rest her-took some running in though-search this forum for my first experiences with her :good:

Hi Bruno,

Spoke to R.S. yesterday, (Friday), and ordered that mount item you mentioned. So far, seems good service. Received an e-mail yesterday afternoon to say it had been dispatched. It turned out to be 5p. less than that shown on the "Bay" and still was free p&p.

Thanks again, will buy som AA Field 5.52mm at the Game Fair in a fortnight.

I bet you must have looked hard and long for a .177 version!!!

Finally, thanks for clearing up my question regarding the Initials, I thought it was along those lines but had no idea how it was activated.

Regards,

Steve.
