nickfromsomerset
Hi everybody. I'm new to all this and am totally new to this forum mallarky .I just logged on here after seeing the pigeon watch website for the second time. I thought i'd introduce myself to everyone.I thought i'd better mention some stuff about myself. As my username suggest im from somerset. I've been shooting since i was 7 years old and flyfishing since i was 12. Im now 27 years old. I shot on the foreshore of the Bristol Channel for duck for several years with not much success and have been involved in Pheasant shooting syndicates, here in somerset, throughout my shooting life so far. I've also decoyed pigeon, lamped for rabbits and the last 2 weekends have shot roosting pigeons.Roosting pigeons being the hardest shooting i do in my opinion..hence on saturday i shot 9 pigeon for 37 shots!but whpo's counting! There is no better quarry for shooting than the fast, sweeping woodpigeon. In fact, i just ate pigeon pie and very nice it was. I am also part of the way into training my first gundog and springer spaniel. Its going very well but as my father keeps saying, 'if the dog is 100 per cent trained before you shoot over her the first time then expect a gundog that does 50 per cent of what you want her to do for the rest of her shooting life'. I think he's probably right. It certainly isn't easy. Anyway, please write back and say hello. I will definately reply. Nick

pin
Sounds like you are pretty well established there mate
nickfromsomerset
Thanks for replying Pin. I am established to a degree but its hard work getting into a safe, good syndicate. Most of the time i'm a guest of my fathers. Other problem i have is that all my shooting is back home. I live 25 miles away from the closest shooting. Its very difficult to train a gundog when its a 2 hour or so round trip to fire a gun or starter pistol to a thrown dummy. Also shoot every other weekend up in powys, mid wales.. a 300 mile round trip. One of the prices you must pay for good shooting i guess. Doesnt help my dog training though. I live in Bristol and you can't go firing starter pistols anywhere within a 10 mile radius of the city.if i through a dummy in air would probably hit a police helicopter. Anyway, needed a moan..sorry you are my victim. You ever trained a gun dog and if so did you have similar problems?

nickfromsomerset
Yeah, will hopefully be moving that way myself. I fish the river chew at Pensford. There's a lot of good shooting land out that way. Guess its all used by sydicate shoots though. I take my dog out around compton dando and chew magna to stanton drew and theres plenty of game out there. I have seen a few shooters out there too. Where do you shoot? do you travel far? TOM'S DAD
I may have been one of the shooters you've seen i shoot over many farms and estates from clevedon to frome, including some of the areas you've mentioned luckily because many of the land owners have seen me grow up shooting with my grandad, (who passed away many years ago), so i've sort of "inhereted" a lot of my shooting, although i have gained quite a few farms through reputation and word of mouth
nickfromsomerset
It takes a lot of time and effort i guess to get the amount of shooting you have access to. Out of all the shooting you do which do you prefer the most and why? I get as much enjoyment out of using dogs as i do shooting. Of course there are a lot of reasons why i love shooting. Its hard to say what really does it for me.. brought up on it like you i guess. Must say its not all about guns and the killing things which most people think. Do you agree? And if you manage to find where they have set fire to the stolen car they were chasing on your way home, you could prep' and cook your freshly shot rabbits on the free barbecue supplied who said you can't find cheap shooting nowadays

Do you agree? all previous joking aside, Nick, sometimes there is an enormous amount of my spare time taken up, but like my grandad used to say, "once it is in your blood, its in your blood", if that makes any sense to you? i do have a very, very understanding missus which i have tried and tested a few before i came acroos the good 'un My son's interest over the last few years has increased mine to be honest with you, has it makes me so proud to see him shooting than it does shooting myself. i do agree with "its not all about the shooting and killing things" 100% as you may find if you read some of previous inputs on to this forum. I love our countryside, our wildlife and the country way of life.
P03
Hi Nick & Have you thought about Vassels park for dog training, loads of room there. I currently live in Frenchay but I was born and bred a Somerset boy, most of my shooting is around W-S-M but I also have stalking in Hampshire, so I know what it's like travelling to shoot.
