oakland rob
Just dug my old Lightforce 170 Striker out of the cupboard and have decided to mount it on one of my rifles, im guessing theres a few people on here who use the Lightforce, if so what scope mount do you use ? been looking at a couple on the web but its hard to tell from the pictures whether they would be suitable, i take it there is a dedicated one for the Lightforce but is it any good ? What you guys using ? Cheers.
Alycidon
The lightforce kit is the best one for the job, its what I use, as far as I am aware its the only kit to fit. In fairness its plastic and does not take to being bashed about, knocking the lamp can move the beam out of alignment, but its quick to realign. The scope bracket comes with a spacer so that you can use it with 30mm or 25mm tubes, the scope mounted lamp is a dedicated lamp for the job, ie you cant adapt one with a handle. http://au.lightforce.com/index.php?PID=46&cat=40#.U8BgJI4t2-8 I know its the Austrailian home site but Ruag handle UK imports these days, not a lot of detail on their website about anything that I could see. Looking in the accessories then theremight be a conversion kit, suggest you ring the lads in Austraila and ask, Ruag wont have a clue. 20 years ago I was trying to fit a 240 to a roof mount kit, they told me it could not be done, yet it was featured on the home page of the Au website. Took 6 months to get the right parts. The Au lads ( Simon?) are pretty helpfull. Is it any good, yes it is, with green or amber lens you can shoot charlie at 200 yards in decent conditions. I team mine with a roof 240 and use both, single handed I get set up for the shot, matey in the edge of the 240 beam then just flick the 170 on (whose beam is centered with the ret) and away you go, With the more modern LED lamps it may be possible to get similar performance in a smaller package these days, I bought my lamps 15/20 years ago before LEDs. wymberley
The only problem with the Lightforce mounting system - which is a minor point really - is that it has an anti-recoil system which is spring loaded. This means that it is possible to lose the target as the lamp 'flips' for a brief period immediately as the shot is taken. At the longer ranges which the 170 is perfectly capable of handling but with obviously reduced visibility, on occasion I've found that I wasn't quite sure what happened particularly if the fox dropped to shot. The problem with the new LED lamps is the generally tight beam which means that as you've flashed it about trying to find something, you won't because the 'something' is now in the next county. Combining the two different types is worth a try - spotting with the Lightforce and shooting with the LED.
