Charlie_79
Hi everyone I just have a few quick questions to ask I am thinking about buying a couple of days wildfowling (driven duck and a bit of goose) And just wanted to know the rules and regs on what type of shot is aloud, Going by what I have read I take it using lead shot is illegal ? I am currantly using sxs aya yeoman and an sxs webley&scott 700, both of wich I highly doubt are steel proofed, does this mean I will have to buy a new more modern gun ?, It might sound like I'm a bit clueless but I just thought I would clear it all up to prevent any mistakes Any help will be very much appreciated Charlie
AberFowl
Driven duck isn't wildfowling. Up here in Scotland we can use lead if not over wetland. England and Wales I believe you can't use lead at all for duck and geese. If its only and odd day and not to many shots expected I would recommend getting some bismuth, pricey but will do the job through any gun and choke Most guns in sound condition with chokes less than half will be fine with standard steel shot which is capable of duck and closer geese If you intend on doing alot more or do end up doing some proper wildfowling it would probably be worth getting a gun that will fire high performance steel. Just my opinion Good luck with whatever you decide to do and enjoy! Edited August 17, 2014 by AberFowl
silver pigeon 3
Cartridges have to be non toxic, alternatives to steel are bismuth, hevi shot and tungsten. All of these are ok to put through non steel proofed guns.
AberFowl
Hi silver pigeon 3, I was always under the impression hevi shot was to be treated the same as steel shot?
silver pigeon 3
Hi silver pigeon 3, I was always under the impression hevi shot was to be treated the same as steel shot? Just been looking on the lyalvale site and it only says the 36g loads need to be put through guns proofed for steel, the 31g and 26 seem to be Ok through all guns. Also in the pinned steel shot topic in the wwildfowling section on here David from BASC says that the newer hevi shot is all Ok in any gun. So I am now a little confused!! AberFowl
Ah ok, yes slightly confusing. My guns are all proofed for ho steel so don't need to worry about it but interesting to know. I have always advised against hevi shot through guns not proofed as I understood it to be unsafe.
figgy
Think the new hevi-shot is polymer based so softer than the older harder stuff. I had a read online but price put me off, couple of boxes of that or a slab of steel carts. Figgy

Looking in the cartridge stock when sorting this season's I found some tungsten 3's and a handful of 1's. I reckon they are left over from my 1st season fowling!
