Cyber
Been on the ranges today with a mate and his dad. Me and my mate were shooting the furthest away spinner. We were getting this 9 times out of 10 but we didn't know how far away it was so when we had to top up on pellets I asked how far away these were and he said exactly 60 yards away!! The spinner is only about the size of a 50p piece so I'm well chuffed. I have never attempted shooting at this range with the air rifle and I won't do on live quarry, think my limit on live quarry is between 40-50yards max (in calmish weather!) I'm well chuffed though, and it gave me the chance to work on different ranges working on my milldots which I feel I have mastered today! col s10
with daystate sorry kipper posted at the same time same question from me
Cyber
yeah, it was with the Daystate X2 and I have the AGS vipir scope in 4-16x50. This is aub 12ft/lbs aswell. Im actually quite amazed at how little I had to shoot above the crosshairs to hit the target. It was zeroed at 30yards and I didn't even need to lift to the next mill dot! Lightning BSA
hello all, nice one cyber
naddan28
nice! what sort of range do you find with the .22 lightning? I would imagine nearer the 30-40mark?
col s10
do you reckon you could kill vermin at that distance
Cyber
well, i don't have the lightning anymore but about 40 was max although i had shot at 50 with it and got some decent sub 1inch groupings! and as far as I'm aware (correct me if I am wrong) but you need around 4ft/lbs of energy to kill a rabbit in its kill zone (at the target). If you shoot a full 12ft/lbs at 50-60 yards you should stil have around 5-6 ft/lbs (maybe more) which is more than enough to humanely dispatch it. I don't think I would attemt a 60yard shot at any live quarry though, I would however at 50 as I know I can get good 'kill zone'' groupings at this range well, I can at 60 from what I have done today but I wouldn't feel 100% that I would get a humane kill so I wouldn't attempt the shot! naddan28
cyber, how have you found going from the BSA lighting .22 to a .177 PCP? Just curious as I am considering doing exactly the same, altho with a Sxxx (prob S200).
Cyber
hehe, no words can describe it mate! With the S200 or any of the air arms pcp's (My mate uses the S400 in .22) you will be getting the same accuracy that I get out of the daystate!! It is a 'pellet on pellet' machine! If you have ever shot a pcp you will know that they are almost silent, and have no recoil whatsoever. You will notice a MAJOR improvement in your groupings straight away! If you can afford it I would reccomend it all the way!!
Cyber
Well I went to the ranges again on Saturday and was shooting even better than the last week! I managed to put a full magazine onto the 60yard target in a row (bearing in mind its only a little bigger than a 50p piece) I was hitting it 95% of the time and had to allow for windage quite alot as it wasn't a very calm day. When we finished me and my mate went to have a look at the target and we found some of our pellets (we are the only ones on the range that shoot at this range. they were freshly painted before we started lol) and they were perfectly flat and perfectly round so there is obviously well enough energy to knock a rabbit down! On a calm day I think I would be confident enough to take the shot and get a clean kill. Does anyone think this is wrong? My mate was shooting with a BSA Superten and his AA S400. and he was also hitting the 60yarder 95%. his are .22 so exceptional shooting. He didn't have to allow for windage as much though because its a heavier pellet. All the shots were with AA Field pellets (best pellets aroung IMO) Cheers for reading!! SNAKEBITE
Does anyone think this is wrong? Well not wrong, just unadvisable. At those ranges things can go wrong and quickly. A static target that you continuously plink at and get acostomed to is different to a live target that you have stalked. If you are confident enough to do it then you are going to do it whether or not anyone tells you not to aren't you? If you are looking for approval then I'm afraid I can't give it to you because others might think it applies to them and 60yd shots will become a "norm". But there again you don't need my approval do you? Remember that 60yds is usually FAC range.
Cyber
TBH if people don't agree with shooting at 60 yards then I wouldn't. I know for definate that I can hit a 50p piece EVERY shot at 40-50 yards so I think I would take a shot at 50 yards (if I couldn't get any closer) as I know for definate that I can hit it. I know what you are saying about the 60 yard targets though. Thanks for your advice SB
