mentoring dilema

We all know that mentoring is merely an **** covering exercise by your FEO on behalf of your licensing authority. It isn't monitored and is wide open to abuse by both the applicant and mentor, but having placed the onus on both of them mentioned, your licensing authority has in effect passed the buck.

My nephew was told he may require mentoring for RF but the FEO talked to him and was satisfied he knew what he was doing, so that was that.

If you can't find a mentor then your only option is a recognised shooting course of some description I'm afraid, though personally I feel if you have plenty of RF experience it negates the need for CF mentoring, and while we can argue about that all day, it isn't our opinion that counts. Your FEO can insist on this simply because he can, but the criteria which makes you a safe RF shot applies equally to CF. Out of interest you could ask your FEO specifically what he needs you to learn about the safety aspects of shooting CF that doesn't apply to RF.

I have got a range ticket for my 338 lap mag and thats fitted with a 5 shot mag i have never heard of clubs only allowing single shot rifles

As for your mentoring i would just stick with it i was mentored for 6 months with 308 and shot 25 roe in that time and learned to gralloch correctly and look for diseases and other inperfections which is alot more than you will learn on a crappy dsc1 course or belonging to a club
