TIDES EDGE
Whilst working in the pen today I found the first pheasant egg of the year unfortunatley it was just laid in the grass no nest which is the norm these days they just lay them all over the place I think we are breeding birds that do not nest due to intensive rearing methods of picking up the eggs a bit like we have with chickens, well thats my thoughts what do you all think. r1steele
Hens will quite often 'drop' an egg or two before actually laying a clutch to sit on so it's not unusual to find single eggs lying about. Reared birds don't seem to have the natural maternal instincts of wild birds but they will nest and sit if left to it.
jimmydean
If its the first year of laying (usual with bought-in birds) then its the same as with chickens as they move from piont-of-lay to regular laying. They often produce what are sometimes called 'wind-eggs' no real calcium shell, just the membrane as the first or first couple of eggs. If you have the branches/cover in the corners of the pen, they will start to use them - it seems almost as if the natural nesting instinct kicks in (if it hasnt already) with the first couple of eggs !
