Pinfire Restored.

Recommended Posts

Double barrel 12 bore pinfire shotgun by R W Brookes Swansea Glamorgan. Its a late double pinfire of no particular merit other than i over paid for it.

On this gun i have, through expenditure of a great amount of time and effort done many things.

  1. Re layed all the ribs and for end loop.
  2. Put back on face.
  3. Tightened the action.
  4. Repaired cracks in the forend and but stock ( keeping the original repair in the but stock to retain character )
  5. Picked out the checkering in the but stock and forend.
  6. Extended the stock from 12.5 inches LOP to 14.5 inches LOP with a wooden type extension in walnut and re fit the original iron but plate.
  7. Refinished the stock.
  8. Re browned the barrels.
  9. Blued small parts.
  10. Replaced hammers.

This is the gun as it arrived to my dirty, dented, pitted, rusty, loose and off face. ( i genuinely paid money for this )

Thats the top rib lying next to it, it was held on with wood filler and chewing gum.

After all the work listed above was done this is what she looks like now.

Its maybe a little over restored, but the gun offered so much opportunity to practice so many different skills. - None of the pictures show the new hammers fitted as i have only just done them - i may take it out tomorrow if its sunny for a photo opportunity.

Was it worth it? financially definately not, the cost of buying it and then the time to put it right i am under no illusions i bought a pinfire with pitted barrels and a broken and repaired stock and i now have a pinfire with pitted barrels and a broken and repaired stock.

But i bought it as something to breathe some life into a practice several skills in its restoration.

Nice I like that.

That's why I got that adkin to play with and practice on hopefully I can get it done like you have, a bonus is I got it for a drink so hope I can keep the cost down. But I suppose you have to pay for a hobby and can't allways expect your money back.

Have you got any your doing now?

Nixons of Newark, i have seen one or two pinfire guns by them, i assume they come from an earlier maker listed "Nixon and Lawton, Market Place, Newark" I'd be interested in seeing a picture if you would grandalf, collector friend of mine has/had a muzzle loader by the latter maker.

Sorry what i said was unclear, i think - but can not be sure that an earlier maker existed called nixon and lawton of newark market place who made muzzle loading guns, i assume that at some point the "Lawton" part was dropped when someone packed in and died and therefore later they are referred to as just Nixon.

This may be of interest.
