Jim Neal
I shot a bird about a month ago and the attached picture shows the contents of its crop. I can recognise barley in there but has anyone got any idea what the other two grains/seeds are?Struck me as interesting because i was shooting over rape; the other birds had what you'd expect to find in their crops but I felt this crop-full through its skin and knew it had been feeding somewhere else! Penelope
The centre one and the others in the pictures above are maple peas.
Jim Neal
Oh that's interesting, thanks. I'm guessing from the info on wikipedia that these mustn't have been scavenged from a natural source, as it's the wrong time of year (unless they were from drilling?). They must have either been provided as bird food somewhere, in a back garden on a bird table something, or the pigeon sneaked its way into somewhere the peas were being stored! It would be interesting to know what the spiky ones are! Edited June 1, 2015 by Jim Neal
