Tribulations with rotary whirlie said

Recommended Posts

So, two lots of good news today.

One, my big four armed rotary had packed up, was turning then not turning. I had stripped it, but didn't seem to be able to fix it, the gearbox was full of grease, and no water in it, and the motor appeared fine, but kept stopping turning. So had resigned myself to buying a new motor/gearbox unit, or a new rotary. Seems the manufacturer no longer makes the four armed unit, and where I bought it from no longer stocks that make (a seeland unit).

So, I ended up ordering a new rotary from elsewhere, to give me two units again (one for crow, slow turning) and one for pigeon (fast turning). I also ordered two new speed controllers and a flapper, so one speed controller on the crow rotary, none on the pigeon rotary, and a speed controller on the flapper (can use for both pigeon and crow then)

However, while waiting for that to turn up, I decided to have yet another inspection of the defect rotary, and although I didn't have circlip pliers to totally strip the gearbox, I thought maybe the shaft was seized due to rust (it rains a lot here). So sprayed the gearbox full of sewing machine oil, and let it soak for a while, shaft down, so the oil penetrated the shaft space.

And lo and behold, it now works perfectly. So fitted a new speed controller, and reassembled, and ready to go.

And then, the courier came with the new rotary and flapper too :)

So will then have TWO crow rotaries and a pigeon rotary when the speed controllers arrive, happy days indeed :)

The point of this post is (following intensive research on wiper motors on the Internet ) that the rusting up and seizing of wiper gearbox shafts is very COMMON, and will save you a lot of money (and burnt out wiper motors) if when it starts getting slower, or stops altogether, you strip the back off the gearbox, remove the circlip from the shaft, tap the shaft out, clean and grease the shaft and its housing.

The rust is often NOT SEEN from outside, so goes unnoticed.

Wasn't very happy with A1 Decoy this morning. Happy days, the first package I opened contained the two speed controllers I ordered :)

However, I was less than pleased with the second package I opened, especially as the contents were due to be used Saturday, as that's the ONLY dry day we have this week :(

I ordered THIRTY (3x 10) pigeon decoy socks, to rejuvenate my old pigeon full bodied decoys.

What I received in the package ? THREE only. Bloody expensive then at almost £80.00 :(

Have messaged them and am awaiting their reply, but usually their customer service is very good, although definitely slow

Hello Ray,

Have just responded to you via ebay. It was a coding error when making a listing for a ten pack. Hence the warehouse team thought you had ordered 3 socks and not 3 packs! Always best to give us a call Ray, even though you only sent a message a few hours ago! 27 socks in the post to you first class in hope to reach you by Saturday. My apologies once again.

King regards,

Oscar

Hi Oscar,

your customer service is always very good (which I put at the bottom). The reason I mentioned it at all, is to get people to contact you instead of slagging you off. Too many people by far, always slag a company off, WITHOUT giving them a chance to rectify the situation.

And when the company HAS rectified the situation, NEVER update their statuses to show the positive result.

YES, I wasn't happy (after all, I was hoping to use them on Sarurday morning when I set up at 04:00 for some corvid and pigeon control)

BUT, am I happy with the customer service of A1 Decoys ?

YES, YES, YES, as always, the customer service is perfect.

Yes, it CAN be slow sometimes, especially around this time and Christmas when you are run off your feet with orders.

Do I understand that ? Perfectly, I used to run several of my own companies.

Once again, many thanks for the excellent service, and for the excellent products you supply us with

Oscar,

Northern Ireland, Scotland, and northern England (all east coast sides) seem to have far more crows than pigeon, so there will be a very large market place for them. 95% of the pest birds I shoot are corvids (rook, carrion, and jackdaw, with the odd magpie too)

Ravens and Jays are protected over here though.

Of the remaining 5% about 4% are feral pigeon, and 1% wood pigeon, so you can see, we need everything crow over here LOL
