vole
Got a 2 year old petrol mower.A Stratton and Briggs so called Champion 25.Always been difficult to start. It was over oiled when i got it so tipped some out.Does not prime properly so i put a bit of fuel direct into carburettor.does work but smokes black and the plug gets dirty after2 minutes.I use new unleaded fuel and brand new spark plug. Was serviced 2 years ago.The £70 bill put me off going back there.Oh,the oil filter is clean to.Any ideas?Have i tipped oil where i should not have done? Cheers.

Cheers. sounds like its running rich. make sure the air filter is clean wash it in petrol and shake dry. clean the plug. then on the side of the carb you should find a screw with a spring on it. wind it in clockwise until it stops dont overtighten, then turn back 1 1/2 turns put the choke on and try to start it if it doesn't start open screw 1/4 of a turn and try again. repeat till it starts. when it starts run on half throttle till it starts to strangle and gradually close choke to keep it running smooth. if it runs smooth with the choke fully in when warm, run at half throttle and adjust slightly in either direction, to obtain best setting. good luck. ps when the engine has been working hard remove the plug it should be light brown if its black turn screw in a little if its white do the opposite. Tony9r
Sound advice Peter You might have got some engine oil in the cylinder when you tipped it up
Cranfield
All the advice so far sounds spot on. I have a Briggs and Stratton petrol mower and it is extremely reliable.

njc110381
Whenever you turn it on its side to clean it, make sure you do it onto the side so the carb is on the high side of the engine. It sounds to me as if you've got oil in the carb. Briggs and Stratton are known to be a bit tempermental, or at least they used to be. Most mowers don't have oil filters, is that a typo, or is there oil on the air filter?
vole
sorry air filter. There are black specs in the carburettor(i think its the carb ,it is the chamber under the air filter where the primer bulb squirts). Will the oil burn off with use?
