rogcal
Here in Lincolnshire the police don't seem to worry about lamping at all! The other evening as I was waiting for a neighbour to join me in my car for a trip to the local quiz night, I observed a vehicle drive onto the Fen some two miles away from where I was parked (on sidelights) and within a few seconds the lamping began and knowing all the farmers well enough to know that none of them allow lamping on their fields it was pretty obvious that this was an illegal lamping incident. As I have a handfree set up in my car I immediately called Lincs Police as I drove towards the vehicle. As I got closer to the lampers they switched off their spotlight and pulled over to allow me to pass and as I did so I looked at the registration number and surprise, surprise it was one I recognised from previous wildlife crime incidents. I immediately gave the vehicle details to the police and carried on with my journey but pulled over when I was some two miles away and in a position to observe the vehicle to see if the occupants had resumed lamping which they had. A couple of hours later I rang Lincs Police for news on any outcomes and was not surprised to learn that they had not "resourced" the incident due to insufficient resources. I asked them if the vehicle was known to them in relation to previous wildlife crime incidents (I knew damned well it would be) which they confirmed that it was. Two things worry me here and that is if a legally held firearm is being carried in a vehicle (most probably loaded and or out of its slip) at night on the public highway, then an offence is being committed but as the vehicle was known to them from previous wildlife crime incidents I would hazard a guess that the firearm was illegally held. I would have hoped that given the fact that either of the above scenarios was taking place Lincs Poilice would have taken it seriously but as I said at the beginning they just don't seem to worry about it. Incidentally, illegal lamping has been going on on the Fens for donkeys years and most of us living on the Fens have given up reporting it but in this case I'd sussed out it was a known lamping (and coursing) vehicle and I thought it would be a good idea giving plod a call in the remote chance that they might take an interest. Fat chance! Edited November 14, 2015 by rogcal
