Right then peeps what gun do i want , im sure in its self that this question could lead to hundreds of many different views... I have about 1000 to spend , and i am fairly new to shooting a shotgun . I go clay pigeon shooting on Sundays and will also be doing some rough shooting so i need a bit of an all rounder i think but i haven't a clue where to start...

So any ideas on which models i need to look at

I'm really no expert mate but for a start you really shouldn't be spending that on one of your first guns!? I've noticed at clay shoots there's often a selection of s/h guns for sale, most of which will have been well looked after and nearly all are from the better known manufacturers.

Personally, I think you'd be better looking arround £600 or less and using the rest of your budget on anything else you may need, maybe even a couple of coaching sessions or a load of ammo.

But most importantly of all, get someone at the clay shoot to help you - a gun that fits/suits you well is more important than one that looks good or cost a fortune and the best way to do that is with the help of someone who really knows what they're doing. Don't be affraid to ask these people, they're generaly more than happy to help.

Hope that's some good to you anyway, just remember - you can't buy marksmanship, you learn it. :good:

First gun all rounder: Lanber, Bettonsoli or even an Escort Semi all of those brand new would be well under your budget leaving clays, cartridges and coaching for the rest. If its just clays and rough shooting then maybe a semi? As said previously best way is to try some guns, get in the shop hold then and if poss try a few carts on the clays.

if you can handle a bit of recoil, look for a beretta field gun. you can pick up some around £400/£500

for some reason berettas seem to fit most people, gun fit is the most important thing.

and you will have plenty of cash left.

I say a game gun as you are going rough.

if you went for a sporter it'l weigh you down after a day in the field.

Semi's are not TRADITONAL clay guns and a lot of the funny looks are regarding the safety issue with semi's as in you can never be sure whether they are loaded unlike a s/s or o/u where a broken gun is unable to fire. However semi's do have one big advantage for clay shooting, less recoil making it easier to shoot. This is why I think you will find the perceptions of semi's are slowly changing. I imagine when people first turnt up with o/u's on clay grounds they got some wierd looks but at the end of the day if you are safe and beating their scores who cares what it is? Pump/semi/ou/purdey/baikal you shoot safe and well with it then who cares!

you may be able to buy a beretta 391 semi for around £350 to £500.

same action as my teknys very reliable. and you can adjust the stock to fit you perfect.

only problems with clays is dtl. for some reason dtl shooters dont like auto's

Well thats tough.

in my humble opinion dtl is for those who can't hit sporting targets.

So get yourself an auto lad and get shooting, but when not shooting keep the breech open at all times,

so others can see your gun is empty.

i personally wouldn't get a beretta. i would for £1000 get a miroku mk38 or a mk70 game if that what its for for, they will be under that amount and spend the rest having the gun fitted and lessons. a browning is exactly the same as miroku and made by them, they just like beretta sell more becasue of their marketing. they are all on a par with each other.

after reading all your replies,

from bobby t a miroku mk 38 beatiful woodwork, as good as any browning.but cheaper.

browning b525 is a cracking sporting gun.

the list is endless

BUT. buy your lovelly miroku u/o

or browning u/o

or beretta u/o.

put 2,000 rounds through it and find out you can't hit a pig oil door at 50 yards.

you are mounting the gun ok. but still miss.

your feet are pointing in the right direction you still miss.

whats next hell kettle the gun doesn't fit you.

options.

you can take it back to the shop and loose £100.

have the gunsmith alter the stock and devalue it.

or have an adjustable stock fitted, after remortgaging you house.

a much easier option is to buy an auto.

if it doesn't fit you put in the manufacturers shims and make it fit.

it isn't rocket science.

iv'e done now you'll be pleased to know, best of luck///pete///
