Essex Spaniel Get Together

Afternoon Chaps,

I have just returned from my first gundog class of the summer, bathed in glorious sunshine and the dogs roughly doing as they should.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Mr and Mrs Sweepy there and their Clumber Sammy. So I am sorry to say to NTTF that if he ever needs another home I know of a good one a bit nearer than Canada.

Had a great time at the ESGT met up with Martin who we hope to see again in a couple of weeks at the next meeting. To bad for Mr Sweepy his dog came into season yesterday so he couldn't take his springer,so Ihad to plod along with my stubborn clumber but I will get there and have a good dog at the end of the day :D

How did the lad do then Martin?

I know he had a pretty good first year out, but it must have been nice to go back and reinforce things?

SS :D

He did OK, he is steady enough, just whines a lot when he has to wait while another dog does it's retreive, which is frowned upon in field trial circles.

Just as well I want a dog for shooting and not a robot.

I am really afeter some advice here....I have been pigeon shooting for a while now and have recently got into rabbiting with ferets(not my own ferets....my mates but I am looking at maybe getting my own onv=ce my permissions build up). My littlr girl(4 years old) has been asking for a dog for a while....I do love dogs but my history of ownership tends to be labradors and satffys.....I see lots of pictures of spaniels on these forums anI am intreeged....I am thinking of killing two birds with one stone....ie a family pet and also a furry friend to take along to the field to collect my bag.....do they take much teaching or is it instinct....again ie..... shoot a woody....the springer shots off and brings it back....or is there a lot more to it.

DFB,

It depands what you mean by instinct, if you mean you buy a dog and it automatically becomes a trained gundog then no.

However if you are prepared to put in 10 - 15 minutes a day training then yes instinct does develop and take over.

My ESS is a family pet who also works. we have done a couple of obediance training classes and also attended a gundog club, and although Merlin will never be a field trial champion he certainly does well out in the field and puts quite a few dogs to shame.

It has been hard at times and sometimes it has been easy, and when I get the next one there is a few things I will do differently.

THey very soon catch on to the idea of what is required of them. But it still needs reinforcing from time to time.

Hope that helps
