Hi, help required,

i have just bought a .308 and i mounted the scope, but when i fire off about 5/6 rounds the scope moves (recoil i think) i really don't won't to tighten the screws anymore incase i strip the threads. the question is has anyone else had this problem and if so what can i do about it. i sometimes wish i had kept to my .243.

Try coating the insides of the mounts with a thin coating of the rubber glue that comes in bicycle tyre repair kits. Tighten down while the glue is still wet. It should help the mounts to grip the tube better and comes off easily if required.

I had the same problem on my .243 and this cured it

Can’t understand the scope moving unless you have some very cheap mounts.

You don’t say what rifle you have but if it has a 10/11mm dovetail then invest in a set of Warne mounts, as these are made out of steel and will not swage or move.

Other than that get a couple of weaver mounts and fit weaver rings to them as the grooves with stop any movement.

Can’t believe the tube is actually moving in the rings though.

i have bought a cheap second hand midland rifle and i have been told new mounts are hard to get hold of and probably cost more than the rifles worth. i bought the rifle because it was purchased by a local farmer (when new) and he has only fired 60 rounds through it, the rifle looks brand new but the scope that was on it he took off and sold seperately

What size is the dovetail then. Is there anything here that will fit-

The problem is caused because sometimes the rifles aren't as straight as they should be.

I had the same problem with my Parker Hale. Contact Norman Clarke gunsmiths and but some weaver style blocks and some millet mounts (about £28) or just buy the bocks (about £5)(The millet mounts give an amount of horizontal adjustment). info@normanclarkgunsmith.com

My scope now is totally solid.

Whereabouts in Wiltshire are you?

Cheers,

Dave

the dove tales are 1 1/2 inches long and 3/4 inch wide, i have been told to put some sticky fixture pads in the rings to make them hold
