Hello, my new Anschutz 1417 has arrived along with the Nightforce SHV scope.

The Nightforce scope is awesome virtually no parallax error, spent most of the morning just looking through it. Crystal clear, so much better than those Hawkes and MTCs I've been using till now. Good positive clicks on the turrets, very smooth & precise parallax and magnification adjustments.

The Anschutz its self is lovely, nice stock feels great to hold and weighs in just under 3.5kg with the scope. Nice feel to the 2 stage trigger but won't get a chance to shoot till next week sadly so cant yet comment on how it follows through. It's fairly short so doesn't quite catch the foam supports in my cabinet. Good job I completely lined the inside with adhesive rubber sheeting. Most people would be adding a Mod' so wouldn't be an issue, personally I don't have it on my FAC. I guess I could add a break to give me the couple of inches I would need.

One thing I will say is the bolt action seems a bit stiff and clunky. I'm assuming its because it's brand new and needs time to bed in. Well I hope so, any one got a take on that?

I went for the 5-20 56mm Zerostop Non Illuminated.

I've never really used the illumination on any of my previous scopes so didn’t think it worth over £100 more for this feature. I like the idea of the Zerostop, I'll be shooting 20,50 & 100 yard targets so may come in useful.

I haven't personally used other higher end brands for an extended period to make a truly fair comparison. However though I had my heart set on a Nightforce I wasn't going to part with almost £1200 without making 100% sure. I'm lucky enough to live close to one of the SGC stores and was able to take a Zeiss, Leupold and Swarovski of similar value outside for a look (can't remember exact models of each). To my eye in that short amount of time I would say the Nighforce was slightly sharper than the Leupold, about par with the Swarovski, but the Zeiss was noticeably a bit sharper than all of them. Bearing in mind a Zeiss in a similar mag range would cost twice as much it makes the Nightforce very hard to beat for the money. I went back a week later just to have another peep through a couple of Nighforces before I finally decided on this one.

Are there cheaper scopes that would be as good as the Nightforce? Quite possibly, but as said the Nightforce is defiantly a great deal better than my previous Hawke SW 30 and MTC Viper. I literally spent most of this morning just panning around my garden, I love it to death!

**Edit**

One thing I would say against the Nightforce SHV is the bloody rubber bikini lens cover it comes with. Easy to remove but a pain to put back on, a really tight fit. Almost like it was designed to fit a 50mm scope not 56mm. Will defiantly be buying some Butler Creek flip ups or something to replace it.
