mosa
Hello there i pick my puppy up on the 6th june and will be 12 weeks old. Obtained a couple of training manuals from the gundog club and in a quick glance they say not to take the dog for long walks etc is this correct? If yes how far do i take her and how often and when should i build up from there. Thanks for any reply in advance!!

No long walks! in a perfect world no prolonged walking on hard surfaces for a while either. A growing puppies' bones are soft and fragile. At twelve weeks it'll be getting all the exercise it needs running around the house and garden. There's no hard set rules for amount, although some people say 10 minutes for every month of age (I think it's that). Just make sure you don't over do it when it's young, this can lead to a puppy growing out of proportion or even contribute towards skeletal and joint problems. http://members.aol.com/summersbrook/body_exercise.html Not sure I agree with the times in the above link, a 6 month old GSP with 10 minutes exercise a day would be one mighty wound up ball of fluff, but it gives you an idea. It's one of the hardest thing about training in my opinion, especially when the weather is nice, all you want to do is get outside with the dog! Paul in North Lincs.
walking long distance too early can cause problems, but I do get my pups out and about at an early age, epsecially ferreting and so on where there's not much mooching to do..........pups grow at an alarming rate, and the last thing you want to do is walk a growing pup miles, as the nutrition it needs for growing, will be fueling the excercise. Lancs Lad
Jas my cocker is out in the morning for about 15/20 mins and in the evening when I get back from work for about the same. But I have a field right across the road, we go down it half way, cross it, back up halfway and back round again. Would guess about a killometer in total with him running up and down. He gets back and is still full of fun........ He isnt over tired or anything but will have a kip later......
