Steel proof barrells

Possibly depending on the gun, best to have a chat with your RFD, but older guns may well not be suitable for steel proofing as the pressures generated in proofing could damage the gun

There is a useful information sheet about steel on the BASC web site , go to the home page and type steel shot into the search box, the data sheet is called Steel Shot what you need to know from a safety point of view

HP steel proofing is the same as superior proof / HP proof or any proofing pressures above 1320bar. (3" + chambers)

any gun proofed above 1320bar should be HP, unless it has a small chamber (2.5" and 2.75" these can and should be 930 bar)

google basc and 100% proof, this should get you the documents you need to confirm, and i wish you would.

but david is correct.

I ask because I don't know. Would a run of the mill 12 bore already superior/magnum proofed already meet the criteria below which appear to be a requirement in addition to the HP steel proof pressure?

Extracted from official BASC website: www.basc.org.uk
Shotguns specially designed to fire High Performance steel shot cartridges. These guns can use both Standard and High Performance steel shot cartridges, as defined in paragraphs 2 and 3, as well as all cartridges loaded with lead shot.
6.1 The quality of the barrel material is defined as: R = tensile strength (resistance) in N/mm2 (measured on the finished gun). S = cross section in mm2 of the barrel crown, measured at the muzzle, and, in the case where the barrel has a choke, measured at a point halfway along the length of the choke. Q = R x S and must be > 65,000 N.
6.2 The choke profile is to be the most elongated possible, the maximum slope recommended by the CIP being 0º 30? (angle of 1º at the centre).
