Frustrating weekend

Saturday saw me heading out slightly later than usual due to seeing family first thing. I checked the same fields as last week but nothing showing. I drove around all my ground but it was the same everywhere, no birds. After 80 odd miles I gave up on the pigeons and headed to a mates farm who is having problems with crows on his lambing fields and had a walk around there with the dogs. On my way there I noticed a large flock of pigeons lift up from some ground I don't shoot. I managed to find a single field of rape in the middle of a small block of land which had been hammered by the pigeons. I made a few calls and got the farmers number who owns it. From what the farmer said it hadn't been shot once all winter and he gave me the go ahead. I agreed to shoot it Sunday.

This morning I got to the field at 9.30 to find 250-300 birds feeding hard. As I took my gear to the chosen spot the birds lifted and headed into the distance. I started setting up and the birds just piled back into the surrounding trees so I thought I'd be in for good bag. The birds didn't want to play the game with some decoying nicely but most jinking off at the last minute. I tried everything changing the pattern, moving the magnet, just stand ups but they didn't seem to want to know. At 15.00 it went completely dead so I called it a day with 60 picked.

Cheers

Ben

Well done Ben, I think all our local birds are spooked even if your new shoot has not been shot , they have all been shot at locally. Nice picture and jets a star now. When we spoke on Saturday you know how poor the returning birds were with fourteen in two hours , when we moved on we had to use all the tricks to get them to commit to the pattern. Great result and well deserved for the miles covered.
