.410 Hushpower cleaning

Hi all im new to this forum but have been reading some of the discussions and they are very good. I am after some advice if anyone can help.

 

I have a .410 Baikal Hushpower which i use on vermin to great effect, however when i clean it i can never seem to get the barrel totally clean however long i spend on it, i always seem to get a small amount of dust/dirt that comes from the wholes drilled in the barrels i have tried many ways was just wondering if anyone had any tips?

Hi Nick.I use a 12g Hushpower Pedretti.I was not sure either so i phoned Saddlery and Gunroom.Very helpful.The gist of it is to lightly oil occasionally and not to push anything through that might break in bits(like bog roll).Phosphor bronze brush good but expect a rattle in the moderator as it pushes the coke deposits out thru the holes.Think every so often the mod needs removing which i am not looking forward to.may let a rfd do that bit.The S and G got a good website on maintenance too.Best wishes.

Thanks for the advice i was thinking the same about the moderator ive only put about 150 through it and it is getting quite clogged up!! Very good gun though i will take a look at the S&G site and try your tips. Thanks!

Youre welcome.Wish i could have had the Baikal myself but would not fit in my breakdown cabinet.As i say the gunsmiths there very patient and give top notch advice.Happy shooting.

I have a 12g Baikal Hushpower. The Mod needs to come off EVERY time it is cleaned - and it is easy. The mod unscrews and a tissue soaked in gun oil can be rubbed over the OUTSIDE of the barrel to get rid of the powder residue - otherwise it will corrode. Baikals/Pedrettis are as tough as old boots - but they need to be kept really clean or they will rot.

Well you live and learn...Had been getting impression it was difficult to remove from reading old pw forums.Will definitely look into removing now .Can you recommend anything to cover the moderator to prevent shine and scratches?need to see bead myself tho.many thanks.

On my other mods I use bicycle inner tubes - makes them quieter and protects them. I guess it would have to be one from a motorbike or moped for a 12g Hushie - I am still looking for one.

 

Grease the mod before you fit the tube to protect the metal.

Thanks for the advice everyone took my .410 hushpower on some sporting clays for a lough this morning and cleaned up!! Got a lot of strange looks and questions which was quite ammusing!!! Have taken the mod off this morning and leaned the residue from the barrel as advised on here (thanks!) it comes off no probs as mentioned and cleans up quite easily. Thanks all!

Badsworth how quiet is the 12 gauge hushpower would it be as quiet as a surpressed 17 hmr?Do you have to use subsonic cartridges for it to be effective?I would like to get one myself if they were really effective for jobs around the house

Jobs around the house! Depends what jobs you have in mind.

 

With subsonic cartridges it is about as loud as an unmoderated air rifle - and yes much quieter than a moderated .17 HMR but louder than a moderated .22 with subs.

 

With standard cartridges it is quieter than a standard s/g but louder than subs.

 

One problem is that you can only get subsonic carts in 6s and 7.5's or 8s. I'd like to see some in BBs or No 2's for Charlie.

 

Some Hushpower users load their own in big loads but you really have to experiment with the ingredients to get it right. It isn't any cheaper than buying factory stuff.

 

It is a useful piece of kit once you get used to it. It is heavy (relatively) and the thick mod places the front bead a bit high - meaning you shoot low unless you learn to compensate.

 

I recommend them for those with a yen for something as bit different.

Hi Tikka mark.I am new to shooting but I now use a Hushpower Pedretti 12g as my main gun.It weighs about 6lb.I cant reload so regret not having any heavier subsonic carts than the 6s as said above.My gun is lots more normal to handle than the Baikal hushpower.i think cos its about 8inch shorter.(no forend).Fairly loud with normal ammo but significantly less than un moderated 12g.Farmer never hears me when using subs.His house about 200 yards away.
