Pitting and pattern

So, I did some polishing. I tool a 20ga wire brush, wrapped it in 0000 whool, mounted it on a brass rod.

Put some T-cut polishing cream (Halford) mixed with a little bit of oil in the barrels, and mounted the brass rod on my bosh driver/drill... Just enough friction to feel some resistance in the motor, but not enough to 'strain' it.

Did about 50 in/out of the brush in both barrels, cleaned it and had a look; it's a LOT more polished than it was. The top barrel is mirror like, and the bottom one a lot better than before I feel.

Went shooting; did about 150 birds this afternoon, and had a look at the barrels inside afterward. It felt a LOT cleaner than before (was shooting 27g fibre Hull). Also, when I added bore cleaner fluid to the barrels, it 'ran' down the barrels immediately and pretty quickly; it's clearly a lot smoother in there -- it used to 'ooze' down a lot slower.

Cleanup was a lot easier already; normally I have to use quite a few (4+) passes of the tissues to remove the residues after the bore cleaner+wire brush; this time around, the cloth was almost clean after the second pass....

So overall, very good result. Now that I 'see' the tiny defects in the barrels, I know that I have a bit more polishing to do, so I'll have another pass at it in a little while; but it /does/ work...

If you do that, make sure to pass another cloth with gun oil into the barrels to seal it; removing material and brushing metal changes the surface properties considerably, and it needs sealing until it stabilises; otherwise, it might just start rusting quicker than it might have done before.
