Had a lesson, loved it, so what next?

Hi All

Did a little clay shooting in my teens and want to get back into it. Had a lesson this morning just to check and it was great but quite a distance away from me. From reading other posts, it seems that a mix of lessons and practise is the way to go.

Although I will get a license and gun, I want to do some more shooting first.

My question is, if I find a club that hires guns (I live in Brighton so recommendations would be great!) what happens - do I simply turn up and they point me towards a trap and away I go or is it more organised than that?

Thanks

Axe or Sussex Lad would be those to ask, Axe lives in Brighton himself so would be able to reccomend. As for what happens, I dont think you can just "hire" a gun and shoot unsupervised without a SGC, not 100% though.

Its impossible (in my experience, anyway) to just hire a gun and shoot without a sgc. You need to be with someone with a licence on their property or on a section 11(6) exempt ground. I started out last year just like you, and a few nice people on this forum offered to meet up and let me try their guns. I'm sure someone in your neck of the woods will come forward but failing that you'll have to pay for lessons or try out days. Put in for your SGC and when it comes you'll be able to hire guns from some grounds.

I started clay shooting in February in the same position as you. I took four lessons (£50 a time for 50 clays, use of gun and instruction) and then applied for my cert. I was lucky and they were v quick in north-west London and I got my cert in three weeks and know have own gun and can shoot at the v good A1 shooting ground in Barnet for £12 for 50 clays. I now shoot every week and am searching out "real" pigeon shooting opportunities.

There is a clay shooting ground near worthing and another just outside Horsham. I'd have a few lessons whack your certificate application in and then get your own gun. Remember to fit your gun cabinet before the police inspection - saves time - and do use very secure wall and floor bolts.

Good luck and enjoy!
