diesel30
I built a new hutch 2 years ago i put 4-5 coats of wickes fence paint on it inside and out its water based and its kind to animals then ever years i give it another coat do it when its nice and warm it dries in 15-20 mins but keep an eye on your ferrets if you put them in the carry box when you paint it cos dont forget if it hot on the day you paint it they can easily get heat stroke and we dont want that good luck with your painting diesel30 Forgot to tell you after i painted the outside and roof i covered the outside and roof in felt roofing sheets good luck and let us know how you get on Diesel30

lurcherboy
I used Cuprinol green paint for fences etc. (cant remember the name) and it hasn't killed any ferrets yet. LB
Cranfield
Any of the water based wood paints/treatments will be OK, just give it plenty of time to dry and "air out". A good tip for any outside exposed surfaces (roof/sides) is to cover them with aluminium flashing. This obviously waterproofs the hutch (and doesn't need redoing every few years), but the aluminium coating reflects the heat and keeps the ferrets cooler when its hot.
