Holland&Holland
This weekend shot my first roebuck of the season. Was with two mates of mine and have a lot of high seats in the area so always difficult to figure out which one to pick out. Owner said he put some menure ? (****) on the grassy slope which is one of my favorites to sit. He reckons the roedeer will not come out because they smell it, and taste the grass . I replied that this spot always has loads of roedeer coming out of the wood and also cross over to other woods and fields. So i have a go regardless of the **** on the grassy field. Got up at 03.30 and sat on the high seat at 04.00. Spotted 3 roedeer after 15 minutes. Couldn't tell what they where untill it got a little bit brigther. Two females and a buck. Spotted 4 other roedeer, one of them a big buck, but to far away on the top end of the slope. Concentrated on the other buck, a young first year. At first he was with the other two at 200 meters. He then started coming my way and started feeding again at 160 meters. I like my shots closer by, and i still have time so why take the long shot if you do not need to? And yes it decided to go to the woodland and cross over in front of me at 120 meters. Short whistle stopped him, took the shot and it signed and ran for 40 meters and disapeared in the woods edge. I was confident about my shot so just waited. Amazingly enough the other roe deer just looked round, and started feeding again. So waited 30 minutes enjoying the sight of the other deer and thinking my shot over. Still feeling happy with the shot. Then got of the high seat and started walking to the place i shot the buck. By now i got the attention of the other roe. They where not sure what to do, kept standing and looking round at me, but eventually took of. You never see that happen when you are stalking for that big buck. Then they are gone in a second. Found light coloured blood on the spot so pretty confident it was lung shot. Followed trail and found loads more blood. On edge wood the trail was less but with bit of scouting found the trail again. Found the buck 30 meters inside the wood. Well placed shot, bullet bounced off a rib and huge hole on the other side . Amazing that they still can run off like that with the damage done. So everything turned out great. Include pictures, also shot another buck this weekend. Will show that one later.

Hang it for about 10 days below 7 and it should just be about right for the table

Holland&Holland
@ Henry D. It was in Germany, no hills around in the Netherlands I am lucky enough to get invited over there several times a year by a german hunter. @ mannlicher stu Unfortunately i had to skin it that afternoon and put it in the freezer that evening so it is frozen for the trip home. Normally i let it hang for two days but there where to much flies around and no place to put it cool and protected. Will arrange something in future though.
