Oly
Done some ringing around...thinkI'm going to simply go for the Hornady/Stoneypoint OAL Gauge & Modified Case...anyone know why I shouldn't or otherwise?
Graham M
Won’t do any harm so go for it. I used to get all wound up with trying to get the enth degree of accuracy out of my rifles, but in reality when the shot is taken at a fox etc at normal ranges you will do just as well with cheap factory stuff. Let’s face it, if you can put a round into a 2inch circle at 175yds then the extra ½ MOA isn’t going to make a lot of difference is it. Then again if you enjoy getting that bit extra then I don’t see why not. G.M.

Dunkield
I would say the AOL gauge is well worth having, it still amazes me the difference in chamber dimensions in factory rifles. Luckily I was able to borrow one for both of my calibres One of the biggest differences you can make is creating rounds that fit your gun, factory ammo has to fit all guns. As for Graham's factory ammo comments, I agree, BUT 'cheap' factory ammo prices are on the up and up all the time. As no one had any, I had to pay £8.60 a box for AE's yesterday ahead of a Bisly trip today. Bisley armoury quoted me £10 a box If thoses prices become the norm, hand loading will make even more sense.
Graham M
Certainly not advocating the complete use of factory ammo’ because I do enjoy reloading my own. My analogy was simply to point out that even ammo’ that is loaded up to simple standard dimensions will shoot as good (if not better) as factory stuff, and therefore isn’t really needed for deer/fox shooting due to the lack of a real need for ¼ MOA accuracy. PPU ammo’ can be often be bought for less than the cost of the cases, powder and bullets and if it shoots well through your rifle will suffice very well for anyone who can’t reload. However for the loader who really wants to find that magic formula ………………… G.M.
