I've got a pretty basic webpage which struggles in the google rankings, i want to avoid adwords but is there a place i can go to where you can learn how to get more exposure for the website or enable it to be seen/found on google more easily?

Thanks in advance

There are some basic things you can do to start:

- Register your website for google webmaster tools if you haven't already.

- Read the latests SEO guide for google and make sure your site complies with the current standards

http://static.googleusercontent.com/media/www.google.com/en//webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf

- Make sure you submit a sitemap to google (use webmaster tools) and then follow up on any broken links/pages.

EDIT

It's covered in the SEO guide I linked but you will obviously want to make sure your content is relevant to the keywords for which you want to rank. Regularly updated content which is relevant to your keywords will help get your rankings up.

I wouldnt waste your money on Adwords its quite well known many people skip over the sponsored ad areas on google into the proper listings

Big thing for google is "natural traffic" and the best way to do this is interaction through other websites and social media. DO NOT under estimate the power of social media facebook, twitter, linkedin etc it works for pretty much any product or service. The natural interaction from people on your social media channels pushes your website up the google listings far quicker than anything else i have seen. Not looking to start another discussion on it again but a big reason Labour did so well in the election was they used social media properly.
