Burishoole
Good evening I am a new member I have been lucky to get two fab pieces of land for a small friendly walked up shoot, question is, there is an existing small pen which we will put some exlayers in but i have built a new pen approx 100 meters around. I have put 7ft fences up and netted half the pen to stop flying attacks, I am planning on keeping the poults in the netted area for 7 to 10 days. I will then lift the side netting to allow them to get in to the rest of the pen and they will be able to get out and back in via pop holes. I just want to give them plenty of protection and allow them to settle. i have got 3ft of turned out wire fencing at the base, wire netting turned out at top of posts to stop climbers, two standards of electric wire running around the out side, fen traps set up and four live traps baited for foxes. i would welcome your thoughts on the netting of the pen and any further suggestions for a passionate newbee., cheers. ShootingEgg
Pen sounds like its ready for anything... Dont over stock it else they will peck and you will lose them that way, only other thing to do is to shoot the foxes as well as trapping, id set up squirrel traps too so you dont get hopper damage. Sounds like you have alot of deterrents already in place.
Burishoole
Thank you for your reply, i have also got a high seat/platform situated between both pens. I do not have a rifle liecence so imwas planning on baiting and shooting the foxes with a 12G. What are your thoughts on the half netting of the pen? ShootingEgg
Never half netted a pen myself, galvanised metal sheeting and thick shrubs for cover would work if you have that to hand. Once the birds are out of the pen they will be open to the elements also so will it really have an effect?
Burishoole
Yeah I get that I was just looking to settle them in get them used to the wood then open the netting after 4 or 5 days going to give it a try if they are two unsettled I will remove the existing netting.
