sandspider
Hi all I've got a persistent leak from my ancient Yanmar tractor, where a hose from the radiator joins the block. I've replaced the hose, tightened it mercilessly, bedded it in with self-amalgamating rubber tape etc. but still a bit of a leak when hot. Thinking of giving a bottle of stop leak a go, given the tractor is pretty ancient and agricultural and is unlikely to have any fine tolerance parts that the stop leak may clog when it shouldn't. (I wouldn't use it in anything modern / delicate) However, I read on the internets that stop leak is a bad idea in tractors like mine with no water pump - as the thermosyphon effect is all that circulates the water. But I can't imagine that any part of a radiator system that only circulates via hot water moving upwards could have really narrow galleries that might be blocked by stop leak? Has anyone tried stop leak in an old tractor without a water pump, and did it work / block the rad? Bit of a long shot I suspect, but you never know on PW! Thanks. ferguson_tom
Sounds like your hose clamps are rubbish and not compressing the hose enough. What type are you using?
sandspider
Jubilee clips, hefty and good quality ones. However, in order to avoid hose kinking, I had to use the hose with the spiral wound wire inside it, so it's quite thick walled hose, and the wire is fairly thick too. Having said that, it did leak with thinner rubber hose too... I could possibly tighten them even further, but I don't want to overdo it. ferguson_tom
You need clips designed for use with re-enforced hose. Try these they look similar but are much much stronger than traditional style jubilee clips and work a lot better than the Nut and Bolt type. The JCS ones outperform the Jubilees ones of the same design and clamp harder on the hose. I work for JCS and come across this sort of thing everyday. https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/hose-jubilee-clips/4942093/?relevancy-data=636F3D3126696E3D4931384E53656172636847656E65726963266C753D656E266D6D3D6D61746368616C6C7061727469616C26706D3D5E2E2A2426706F3D31333326736E3D592673723D2673743D43415443485F414C4C5F44454641554C542673633D592677633D4E4F4E45267573743D68746D323770267374613D68746D32377026
sandspider
Ahh, they do look rather more hard core. Thanks, and for your PM too
