white fox
Taking a perimeter rutted track around a field today after white bars, water hid how deep the ruts were, and ended up seriously grounded. Chassis rails on the top of the ruts and one wheel on each axle just spinnining. There were trees to the side, so tried using my mighty capstan winch but snapped the rope after replacing failed shear pin with split pin. The pull was not straight but to one side, and the forces needed to shift the landy were too great for the rope. Tried digging myself out but laying in water filled ruts - it became too much. Ended up calling a buddy in a tractor to drag me out. So was wondering if a ground anchor would have helped as the winch rope pull would have been straight. Has anyone experience of ground anchors, am thinking about making my own. Also thinking of a hi-lift jack. WF PS might buy myself a tractor

starlight32
To make a ground anchor use the following; 4"x 2" mild steel channel section 1m long 4 x 1m Lengths of Rebar (You can use round bar but rebar is case hardened and normally free!) Drill four holes in the channel at equal positions along its length Weld over size washers along half the length of the bar ( This is the teeth) Weld an eyebolt to the center of the channel section. Weld a lug to one end of each of the bars (For removal from the ground with crow bar after use) When in use- position the channel, drive the bars through and away you go! After use use a crow bar to remove the bars from the ground This type of Ground anchor is ideal for a horizontal pulling force, and if you need deviate your line of pull use further a further anchor with a Snatch Block. Don't use Nylon rope either- procure some wire rope -sling,winch wire etc, and use Bulldog clips or splice it to give an eye. You can off course increase the material sizes to give a substancial lump but in practical terms this will be fine for what you need. white fox
A snorkle and road tyres whats that all about?? lol at least you got out in the end eh Dave Could have done with a snorkle when laying in the water filled rut trying to dig the Landy out  Spent all day drying my boots out. That woman in my house who carries a bucket, wasn't too happy about my mud drenched clobber - oh well Thanks for the advice Lads, will see what I can knock up. Funny thing was the farmer who pulled me out couldn't care a hoot about me or my Landy, just interested in how many pigion I shot. ???
