Home/Re-loaders Shotgun Help, Please

Recommended Posts

I haven't a clue which is why I'm asking so please feel free to put me straight.

I imagine that for, say, a 12 bore 65mm fibre wadded cartridge if you have a light load, say, 21g and also heavier, say 32g you are going to have differing charge weights for the same velocity. Am I right in thinking that the volume and thus column height difference between the two components is going to be greater for one than the other (I'm guessing the load will have the greater difference) and as a consequence the wadding column will also differ to fill the case - light load/long column, heavy load/short column?

This is where I really lose it. I imagine that with mono wads that the cup is always full - neither partially nor overflowing for any given load weight. If I'm right as above then with the load height change exceeding that of the charge, differing wad lengths will be necessary but the cup volume/height is pre-determined by the load so how is this done? Once again, I'm guessing that any change would be in the cushion area of the wad.

Hope that makes sense.

Powders rarely work well with such a huge range. So comparisons are not good, neither is powder volume.

Different wad heights are the key

I think I understand and monowads we can forget about. But broadly speaking, is it fair to say that light load equals long  wad column and vice versa?

Many thanks for your input.
