Investigating further I found a report rumouring that a Watchet man many years ago found a conger in a hole, unable to get it with dog or stick he reached in to grab it. The conger fastened onto his hand and he was unable to free it. With the tide rising he was eventually forced to amputate his own hand, then made his way to Watchet and cauterized the stump in hot pitch. Probably ******** but a great story.
