Salop Matt
As others have said, Horses are unpredictable at the best of times. I have grown up horse riding and some will jump at their own shadow and others would be happy grazing on a gunnery range, then you get the others that display either characteristic 10 minutes apart and for no apparent reason. If they are going to spook they will regardless of air rifle / .22lr or just a torch beam going around. The .22lr is a fantastic round in the right situation, but for me i wasn't content to use it many places. Myself shooting mostly small holdings I didn't keep my .22lr fore than 6 months as I was never at ease with the ricochets regardless of the backstop. I kept my HMR and as I already had PCP charging kit I went for a FAC Air-Rifle, (.22 @ 30ftlb) and its a great tool for this setup, also great on the shoot for squirrels and corvids filling the gap between 17HMR and sub 12ftlb air-rifle.
