tobes
I've got a .22 Weihrauch HW-97K which I use for the occasional bit of plinking, plus the odd squirrel or two. However, after ignoring the garden (1 acre) all winter I've noticed it's got rabbits and anything up to 20 woodies at a time. Not good for the veg patch. Seeing as I'm getting back into full-bore target, I'd like to get a PCP rifle that will a) give me some low-cost practice for the big guns and make a mess of those flappers. My shortlist is: - AA S410 - Falcon FN19 Lighthunter - Weihrauch HW-100 I'm not sure I want to splash out for the HW-100, particularly after a few iffy reviews. S410 sounds great, but the mechanism on the brand new one I played with this week really sucked (maybe it was just that rifle) - loved the feel of it though. The Falcon looks great and I've heard wonderful things about it - except for the cylinder capacity. Most importantly, I'll be applying for an FAC later in the year, and would love to get something that could be upgraded by a gunmaker some time in the future. Not sure about calibre - my fieldcraft sucks, so most of my shots have to be 35yds+. Love the hitting power of .22, but would switch to .177 if it's worth it. So, does anyone have any advice on these three please? Thanks in advance Tobes
Guest Mr Pieman
Go for the AAS410. Only saying that 'cos I had one and it was mavellous. Try to get to a decent gunsmiths and 'have a go' with each PP
tobes
OK, so I made the big mistake of dropping in at a gunsmiths today... Love the S410. Feels as good as everyone says. I prefer the feel of the Falcon, really impressed with that. Didn't like the weight of the HW-100, so that was ruled out. After all that - and I'd nearly decided on the Falcon - the dealer pulled out an Air Arms S310 in great nick with a Hawke 4x40 scope on it. All for £250 or so. I couldn't say no, just added a second-hand Harris bipod , a Logun pump and a Logun silencer. I've just fired one magazine - this thing is fabulous! Now what can I buy with the money I saved? Shotgun certificate should arrive any day now - maybe it's time to get back down the shooting ground... Yours happily, Tobes
Wookie
Tobes, No need to apolagise! We've all been there you know! I went into my local gunsmith back when I had _decided_ I wanted a BSA Spitfire. It was everything I wanted in an air rifle and I had the money for it and everything. Anyway, I walked in, saw it, was a bit put off by a mashed seal (from a brand new gun too) and saw an FN12 Raptor Lighthunter in the secondhand shelf... Well, suffice to say I knocked the bloke down 50 quid and walked out with it. It's a lovely gun and fits me perfectly! Saying that, the wife still doesn't know how much it _really_ cost me! Glad you found your perfect rifle though. It's a damn fine choice! Wookie
tobes
Wahey! No pigeons yet, but I just got a bunny at 50yds! (I know it's 50 because I've measured out the garden for sighting purposes). OK, so I'm pushing my luck at that range, but it's on a Harris bipod so there's no excuse for missing... I love this airgun. Tobes
Fisherman Mike
 Its not the missing at 50yds thats the problem Tobes.... its having sufficient residual muzzle energy left in the pellet at that range to cleanly kill your quarry. I have been air rifle hunting for bunny for over 20 years and I can count the number of clean kills Ive taken at that range on one hand... Enjoy your gun but dont get too carried away.. FM.
