berthaboo
i have heard and readed that you should start with mice and rabbits first as it can put the pup of rattin if started to early i would not put a pup in a pillow case with a rat
tody27
Just a quick question- How the hell are you going to get a rat in a pillow case!! and if u did, how would you tie it up with the rat AND a dog running round trying to murder each other!! On a serious note: Take the dog along to the ratting- dont make it do anything if it doesnt want to. Chances are it will have a field day!! I have got a cross breed russel (with something!! ) and she has been ratting since she was a pup- shes now 10 and still loves every minute of it. tody
new to the flock
Abolt: Forget about a sack or pillow case, this is a great way to terrify a young pup and turn him completely off hunting. As stated before take the pup out ratting with another well started dog, keep the pup on the lead and out of harms way letting him watch for the first several rats. If the pup is straining on the lead then release him and let him give it a try. He will let you know if he is ready or not. Any terrier worth its salt will take to game like a duck takes to water. Remember to use your head while training and to weed out idiotic ideas, such as pillow cases. If your pup does not want to get into the thick of things right off the bat try tieing a thin polly rope, (binder twine from a hay bale), to the front feet of an already dead rat. Work with your brother, one of you drag the rat forward in a jerky manner to entice the pup to follow and pounce on it. The other work the young pup on the lead encouraging him to get the rat. When he does grab the rat or chase it encourage him and give him praise. This is called introducing the pup to its prey in a safe controlled manner, where all things will end on a happy note. This is one of the best ways to start a pup as you are making sure that everything is positive in the initial introduction. You are also introducing with out the worry that the pup will suffer a bad bite, which may turn it off hunting rats and other game permanently. Remember keep it FUN
