ritz
Hi guys, My dad is looking at starting up shooting and he is a lefty. He was wondering how big a issue it would be to actually have a left handed gun, i.e. how much difference is there really? Main reason for this is the issue of finding a good 2nd hand lefthander for a decent price... they all seem to be around the 700+ mark Probably looking for a Lanber,Miroku,Beretta etc ( i know the money wont get me far with those but still... ) The left handed guns on guntrader is very limited, so was wondering how much of an issue the left/right handed thing is with the guns. Thanks R
Baldrick
I'm right-handed and left-eyed, so I shoot left-handed. To be specific, I shoot right-handed shotguns that are all have a left-hand cast to fit me. I've never bought a true left-hand shotgun (where the opening mechanism is reveresed), as it's pointless and they are rarer than rocking horse manure. For £700 you should be able to get a good r/h Miroku, and have it fitted to suit a left-hander.
Poacher
I'm a lefty a shoot with a 'normal' right handed gun, the action isn't a problem at all, in fact i'd probably get confused if the action was reversed. Just make sure that when selecting a gun that the cast is straight, otherwise you'll be making life awkward. If a straight cast is still too uncomfortable then i'd suggest get it fit/cut by a smith. Aaah ok , that seems ok then, my dad's only experience with shooting clays ahs been with a right handed gun and he did say that he didnt feel uncomfortable, I think we just need to get him to a gunshop and let him feel a few on his shoulder and see if they feel comfortable, if not have them fitted. Thanks for the replies so far. R
gdunc
Just to throw a spanner in the works as you say he is new to shooting - make sure he is shooting from his dominant eye side. I'm a new shot meself and as a natural left hander was shooting right handed O/Us from my left shoulder and could only hit anything with my right (dominant) eye closed. I've now swapped to shooting from my right shoulder to tie in with my dominant eye and am getting on a lot better as I can keep both eyes open and actually see the second clay in a pair! The swap over wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected. However, if he's left eye dominant then he'll be fine using a right handed O/U from his left. For your budget you'll be looking at used Silver Pigeons etc. and they mostly all have straight stocks as std.
