  6. Due to an unexpected change in vehicle (can't help acting on impulse!) I'll be selling my TransK9 B12 transit box which fits a number of vehicles including the LR Discovery 3 and the Nissan Pathfinder. It's pretty much as new in that it has been used for a year but cleaned often and is completely undamaged, has the current spec. of top and bottom locks and is grey in colour as can be seen here (in my soon to be old car) http://www.transk9.com/index.php/vehicle/Pathfinder/ These are the very best of boxes and will last forever with minimal attention. Since I'm throwing in the rubber mat too I'm looking for £300.
  7. TransK9 are excellent, I have one myself, but if it is to be lifted in and out regularly they're a bit of a pain due to their weight. It's not unmanageable but due to their size the weight can be an issue for moving the box. Lintran are a good alternative and are a good bit lighter and made of fibreglass so easy ot hose out. Seem to come up quite cheap on fleebay quite often too.
  8. I really like liver cockers and she looks a cracker - how's she bred? Sorry to digress, back to the original thread - buying a spaniel trained to trial standards is great.... if you rough shoot or take a lot of walked up days. As a picking up dog they're not so good. I have a real hard going trial winning springer who even at 7 will run in from the peg given half a chance. If you've got the right work for her you'll have a great time, i you've not you'll end up getting annoyed as the dog will most likely not be so keen to hang around at heel on picking up days - though I may be wrong as it depends on the dog and can be done. As for the bitch with dogs problem - get her gubbins removed as she's already proven she's a whiner and shouldn't be bred from. Get yourself some real spaniel work shooting over the dog though and you'll have great days out
  9. I have both cockers and springers and you can't really define their characteristics to just bold statements like 'soft' or 'headstrong' - so much is defined by the breeding lines. See as many as you can working and go for whichever one feels right for you - either breed can do pretty much anything you ask of them if trained properly. They all have their own individual characters - especially cockers who sometimes seem to think that they are people!
  10. Sounds like it's all coming together - good stuff. "I correct him without being too harsh and he is brill again." You've picked up on something there that many who've had dogs far longer than you don't get - use the minimum degree of correction necessary. Too many go overboard for minor indiscretions. It's always good to hear someone else praising your dog to let you know you're getting on well
  11. Great story - well done on getting the dog out of her shell and giving her something to enjoy
  12. A short length of flexible hose over the 'mouth piece' of the whistle can make it easier to hold onto with your mouth / teeth and by default moves the outlet hole further from your lips so there's less chance of blocking it.
  13. It's a trialling thing - my friend is really good with spaniels and he's after open wins to qualify for the championships and making dogs up to FTCH. He feels he's done all he can in trials with this bitch so he'd rather take on a young dog to bring on should one with the right breeding arise. It may sound odd to sell a good dog for kennel space but it happens all the time in trialling. The reality is that someone buys a dog that has had 3 years of top training behind her who'll work perfectly from the off.
  14. A friend is selling a fully trained (to FT standards) bitch. She's an excellent all round dog and could be used for anything. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...howtopic=104786

  16. Sounds like the dog is trained and has started to see you as his master - this is great! Keep up the praise when he's good (and give his belly a rub for goodness sake!) and remain consistent with commands. He knows what to do but not necessarily what YOU are asking so don't give him a hard time for commands he hasn't understood - only those he's obviously disobeyed. Keep at it - he sounds like he'll be an asset to you
  17. Sound advice above - don't take him beating unless you're confident he'll not do it again. The more he does it the more of a learned behaviour it will become. If he does (and you're close enough) you'll need to chase him down and get him back to where he was supposed to have dropped to your whistle. You'll need to watch him like a hawk!
  18. I, personally, like the Welsh lines of Maesydderwen and Wernffrwd which produce smaller more 'racing snake' type cockers. A pedigree with these names in will most likely produce lively dogs which are keen to retrieve. The 'older' lines are the ones to look for if you want a bigger built shorter coupled type but I'm not sure of where you'll find these. These 'older' style dogs tend to be more relaxed and are often better for your 'average' shooting man. Be careful with regards to the breeding as if you just want a solid rough shooting / beating etc. dog then you don't want to go for a pedigree full of FTCH as they can really be quite a handful when they're full on trial bred. They are different to train in comparison with Springers and their little personalities can really test your patience at times!
  19. I think you need to show a bit of sympathetic control over the dog - after all he doesn't know who you are yet. I would concentrate on building a bond with the dog first before you worry about his working ability - this will need a certain amount of re-training anyway as you and your instructions will be different from what he is used to. Heel training spaniels is not always necessary but walking tidily on a lead is. Spend a bit of time at home messing about with the dog, throwing a few retrieves and making a big fuss of him - getting him to like you and trust you before trying any training like heelwork. Then you must be very calm and patient as it will be a battle of attrition with an older dog who's never heeled before. Most people who buy a trained dog encounter some problems along the way due to a breakdown of communication - speaking to the original trainer can help sort this out. Ideally you get demo'ed the dog and are familiar with how it has been trained to hunt and retrieve etc. If it's of any consolation I despise heel training and am happy with my spaniels remaining close to me within reason and they are or have competed in field trials. I wont tolerate them pulling me around when on the lead though.
  20. Think you've maybe gotten a bit mixed up with what's involved in a trial, few triallers would ever run a good dog in a scurry. FTCH stands for field trial champion - a dog which has won two open stakes against the best dogs of it's breed in the country. I'm only familiar with spaniel trials but these are run as a rough shoot - two dogs running with guns either side. Trial dogs are expected to do just this and remain under the control of the handler at all times - showing ultimate steadiness. Realistically trial dogs would normally be too hard going as rough shooting dogs as they move at such pace it's difficult to handle them and shoot over them too (for me anyway). A 'nice working dog' is usually that little bit slower that you've got more time to think about getting a shot off. Good breeding goes way beyond the number of FTCHs in a pedigree but if all the lines are dogs proven to produce talented pups then they are what I look for. The right lines give you a head start as the pup should have plenty of natural talent and an inherent trainablity.
  21. Depends on the RFDs and your relationship with them. If they don't know you then could be up to £30 each end but if you use them a bit then could be a token amount. Remember to take postage into account too - this should be fully insured and not sent on a Friday. Under no circumstances use Royal Snail!!
  22. Does Battles Black stink like Jeyes? I use Jeyes then wash again with a citric cleaner otherwise the dogs end up smelling of it. I'd rather just do the one wash out if it smelled ok.
  23. Been intending on writing a quick review of the transit box I purchased from TransK9 in June but hadn't gotten round to it - until now... Having just bought a Pathfinder I decided to get a box to fill the back of it with capacity for many spaniels. Looked at Lintran and TransK9 as I have seen these in the flesh - friends have both of these manufacturer's boxes. Decided on the TransK9 as it seemed a better shape and had all the features I needed 'as standard' - rubber mat, divider etc. Phoned to order and they had one in stock - result! Picked it up in person and have to say that Rob is a top bloke - very good on his product and happy to bleather about dogs and shooting etc. for ages - ended up leaving an hour later than planned. He came and spoke to me at Scone before I ran in the test and will throw in a free protective boot mat if you pick up the box from him in person. The box is the new style with double locks (top and bottom) on each door and is very well made. Panel fit is spot on and the box is silent when travelling. It is a nice fit for my car (or the Discovery3 which I nearly bought) and leaves just about enough space around it to squeeze in dummy bag etc. The only downside I can see is that there is a fair bit of weight in the box so I have to be careful lifting it out to clean it. My car even ended up modelling for the website http://www.dogtrailers.co.uk/b12/b12-pathfinder.html which reminds me I've still not painted that towbar (doh!). Overall I would highly recommend TransK9, there are cheaper around but these are made to last.
  24. I feed mine on a wetted dry food but I give mine hide chews every night and the occasional nap bone (raw) from the butchers. They've all got white clean teeth.
  25. The Colclough one from Paul French video is a good 'un. The Simon Tyres series is good too.
