A Bit of Luck Today

I have had a rather hellish week....will not boar you all and go into that.....but came up with a bit of Lady Luck today. I seem to have found the perverbial rocking horse poop :) Today I located 2 Prunus nigra Ait. Canada Plum a very close relative to Prunus spinosa L. or Sloes. This particular tree is on the endangered list for Ontario and is basically thought to be extinct in this area.

Now I have been a Forestry Technician for 24 years and done a lot of timber cruising in S. Ontario and never come across one of these. I brought a small twig with leaves and around a dozen fruit home for identifing purposes and to confirm. I will be heading back on Saturday to harvest some additional fruit...some for propagation this spring and a few for a wee bit of I guess I will call it Canada Plum Gin.........dont worry I have full intentions of keeping the pits for seed stock.

The funniest part of this is the trees are located in a 150 year old garden that has been neglected and is all overgrown with wild grape.....another that is being harvested this Saturday as it makes the best Grape Jelly......I have walked past these two trees atleast 100 times, the only reason I noticed them there was 1/2 a dozen plums on the ground which had rolled out from under the grape vines I was checking

Although the fruit on these trees is orangy red the flesh has the same bitter sweet flavour of sloes so I am hoping to produce some very nice gin.
