Age of dog for training

Hello All,

Could someone please tell me at what age training should begin?

Also, is it possible or worth taking on an older dog say 2yo and start to train.

Reason I ask, is that there is an opportunity to get a 2yo cocker and was wondering if it would be possible to make something of it.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Pan

If the cocker is from hunting lines and has a stable temperment then yes there is no reason that it can not be trainer for the field.

As for the age to start teaching a dog.....I start at 8 weeks teaching the sit, lay down, recall, heeling and play retrieving. I start the retrieving in a closed hallway with a knotted sock so the pup learns to come straight back to me. There are no formal retrieves and it is all fun with the pup getting as many as it wants until it starts to loose interest. Remember not to be in a hurry to take the sock from the puppy it should be allowed to hold the sock for upto a minute once it brings it to you.
