Cakie174
Hi Whats the craic with these new age pre charged air rifles? I am missing a lot of opportunities on crows and magpies because i can not take a safe shot with my rim fire. Would a new toy be the answer? What is the accurate killing range with these? How many shots is there in a charge? Any recommendations on which ones to look at? Please let me know your thoughts Cakie
Fisherman Mike
Cakie As you have already a FAC for your rim you would be best to consider a PCP (Precharged Pneumatic) which is in excess of the 12ftlb limit set on standard Air rifles. The shot capacity is limited to the size of the air reservoir but generally a12ftlb gun will give 80 to 110 full power shots on one charge unless it has a seperate screw in reservoir ( Buddy Bottle ) like the BSA super 10 or the Theoben rapid range. In which case it can be between 250 and 500 per fill. A 12ft lb gun is limited in effective range to a optimum of about 35 m maximum of 45. I have shot vermin at ranges in excess of this but very rarely. Above 12ftlb guns require a FAC but can be purchased from 20 to 50 ftlb of muzzle energy. The number of available shots at this range is reduced because you are using more stored air at a higher pressure this might be a maximum of 30 or so before recharging. I have shot and killed vermin, Crows, pigeon, squirrel, rabbit at ranges up to 75m using a Theoben rapid FAC and these weapons are very useful at ranges of 50 to 80 m with the right pellet and scope combination. However as their effective range is greater they would be constrained in their use as would a Rim or Centrefire. I had a similar problem to you a few years back and invested in a Theoben Rapid Mk 1 which deliverss about 30ftlb. and has an effective range of 75 m Visit www.theoben.co.uk for some useful information. Hope this helps. FM.
1 of 5
A 12 ft/lb airgun will kill cleanly at almost any range you can soot it accurately. At 55 yds a good .177 pellet will still have over 6 ft/lb left in it (more than enough) and a .22 slightly more. Very few shooters are good enough to shoot that distance accurately in the field though. If going for a FAC pcp a Rapid will almost certainly be best as they use a heck of a lot of air at higher energies so the buddy bottle works well.
