sandersj89
Well it was finally here, first full day at my syndicate. Up early to feed and water the kids before heading of to meet everyone at the shoot arriving at 8.45 to be greeted by bacon and sausage sandwiches, perfect as it was freezing!!! Car temp gauge was showing 1.5 degrees Celsius. But the sun was out, just a shame there was not a breath of wind. Another bit of bad news was some one was seen walking a dog through some of the game cover at 6.30am by the keeper and a lot of birds had been scattered and he only had limited time to dog some back. So it was a slow start on the first two drives, I just get the chance at some very high duck, they came screaming over, first batch needed an 8 bore and heavy loads to get close so left well alone. But I managed to bag a few. I love the start, here are some of the beaters waiting for the whistle at the first drive of the 2007/08 season: I love that anticipation too, nerves jangling and praying the first bird heads over another guns head, senses tuned so every little bit of movement in the hedge rows/woods makes you think it is a bird breaking cover, this is me itching to get going and watching some duck make it safely over as too high: Things soon warmed up, both the temp and the action and on the 3rd drive I had a stonker, 100% hit rate but kicked myself for taking a single bird and breaking the gun to reload the first barrel only to see another bird following the first, no way to get a shot and a right and left chance missed. And the bag starts to grow, lots of smiles and all-round. As always the kids had a ball, the quad bikes get a lot of use!!! A good start to the season, would have been better if it were not for the errant dog walker……grrrrrrrr. But we all had a good time, we were safe and the birds flew well, especially the duck. Roll on 2 weeks for the next day! Jerry
