Spaniel
Hi Im thinking about taking my Springer (almost 2 years old) out beating with me tomorrow to introduce her to Live Game etc. So far my training as covered the following Retrieving canvas dummies to hand, also just beeen carrying out retrieves with pheasant feathers attached to half of dummy. Next week i want to move onto placing pheasant wings on the dummy.. Quartering and turning to 2 peeps of the whistle, but need to calm her down abit on the quartering, as she tends to move rather fast at first. Sitting to Whistle, 1 peep, while quartering. returning to me, on 4 peeps I have taken her while clay shooting and introduced her to the shotgun noise, which there is no problem. My next dilemma is introducing her to Live Game, hence why i DO and DONT want to take her tomorrow. My plan is for me to get her hunting behind the Beaters if i can, and then to concerntrate on the Sit to Flush I really need some good advise on what i should be doing, is it right for me todo this at this stage, or should i be doing further training before taking her along to a shoot etc. or are there other methods to train a dog to sit to flush, other then around live game Thanks in anticipation
Blackbart
If its a big day with plenty of birds she is gonna be excited and when you near the end of each drive there will be multiple flushes at once so trying to teach her "sit on flush" may be difficult her backside will be going up and down like a bangcock hooker.Imo it will be easier to teach her to drop to game by yourself walking up,try to do this in open fields so you can see her at all times, that way it is easier to correct her as soon as she makes a mistake. This is the way i do it anyway and it seems to work ok,but as all dogs are different, some take to it straight away, some dont.Good luck. new to the flock
Personnally I would find someone to go rough shooting with half a dozen times or more if needed. Leave your gun at home and let them do the shooting while you concentrate on the dog. NTTF
polski
Personally I would cover all aspects of training first, work on live game, cold retrieves, shoot over her( preferably let someone else shoot while you work her) warm retrieves and so on. You cannot train on the beating line, there is far to much excitement going on for a novice dog. Get everything right at home first and then(slowly) introduce her to the beating line. Rick.
