28" or 30" for sporting?

I am thinking about starting to shoot a few clays again after the game season is over.

I'll probably get an o/u rather than use my sbs and will most likely get another Beretta, I had one a while ago when I used to shoot clays regular and liked it a lot.

What is considered the best all round barrel length these days for sporting? I have shot with 28" barrels for ages with my sbs and my Beretta had 28" as well, it seemed to make sense as my sbs was that length also but it always seemed that most people used 30" barrels.

What is the norm these days? what do the top shots use?

some top shots use 32" but 30 suits me ok and 28 in an auto

There are as many opinions as there are modals of gun. Just a matter of trial and error until you find what suits you best - I've seen a bloke with a £20,000 gun get nothing and the bloke next to him with a rusty old Baikal shoot like a demon all day and get a huge bag.

I've always ended up back with 28" (and less on some relevant shotguns) barrels, and I used to shoot clays competitively at a high level. I now shoot rough/game almost every day, and I've never felt the need for 30". As OneEye says, it's what suits you. Personally I just use what I shoot best with, and that's 28" (but then compared to Oly, I am a midget at 5'10").

Someone on here highlighted a quote that went something like, "beware the man with only one gun - he probably never misses". You may find that chopping and changing between barrel lengths starts to interfere with your technique, like the dreaded 'I blame the multi-chokes' disease.
