nilly71
Hi All It might sound a bit of a daft question but what do the numbers mean on a scope 3-9x 40 or other. Also what is an ideal one to use for an average shot of 30yds. Thanks in advance. Neil
Vulcha
the first number in the sequence is the magnification. On a fixed mag scope, say 4x or 6x, ther numbers mean the object will only be magnified by 6 or 4 times. If there are two numbers, like 3-9 or 1.5-5, this means the scopes magnification is variable. 3-9 means the scope has a minimum magnification of 3, and a maximum of 9. The last number is the diameter of the objective (i think) lens. this is the one which you end you do not look through. So a 3-9x40 has a minimum magnification of 3, and a maximum of 9, and a 40mm objective lens. To answer your question about renges, i would say a fixed magnification would be fine. I use a 4x40 and can get 1 1/2 inch groups at 30 metres with my springer. But really its up to personal choice. Don't go buy anything daft like a 3-20x56 or something. These are for target use. Though the further you zoom in, the more wobble there is. If i were you i would buy a 6x40, or a 4x40.
nilly71
Thanks Vulcha, The zoom sound a lot like a digital zoom on a camcorder, if i zoom in on something and move slightly its hard to find that object again and i have to zoom back out again to find it. What is a good budget scope for say upto £50 ?, if there is such a thing. Neil
Vulcha
To zoom in you twist a small ring infront of the lens you look in. It depnds how far you zoom in as to how l;ikely you are to loose the target. I have used my uncles BSA 3-9X40 scope and i never enev changed, except to experement. If you want a cheap, zoom scope, try a walther 3-9X56 (large lens, but not too high magnification) for about £53. It also has an illuminated reciticle so you can shoot in darker conditions. If you wanted a fixed magnification, i would say a hawke 4X40, which is what i have. They cost about £30, and you will have enough money left to buy some nice mounts too. The hawke scope is very light, or i think it is! It has a 30/30 reciticle and is water-proof, fog proof and something else proof, i'll just check the box. sharp_shooter
Vulcha: The wobble is the same on all zooms it is just more noticeable on higher mags. IMO 4-16x56 AGS SWAT sounds a great scope, good variable mag, great light gathering ability, sidewheel parralex and 30mm tube to allow even more light transfer. This is £200 however but i was just proving that low mags are not always best and when it comes to lining up your scope 10x is a great help. I can achieve 1/4 inch groups at 30yards with my springer but only when using 6+ mag, if i use less i can only manage 1 inch or a half inch. Nilly: Take a look at the simmons range, all good quality nd bound to be something you like. Alternitively go on www.uttings.com and have a look at the AGS scopes. Light weight and great quality.
