Steel ain't so bad really

Well finally managed to get a couple of rounds of skeet in today. This is where the range is located: http://www.multimap.com/maps/?hloc=GB|fres...7:-3.68315:17||

It is without a doubt the coldest, windiest, and wettest skeet range in the country! It is also the most northern being only 20 yards from the North Atlantic Ocean.

Did pretty awful on the first round, only got 2 out of 25  In my defence there was a 40mph crosswind going from high house to low house and the low house birds were hardly moving forwards! On the 2nd round I found the problem, I was shutting my left eye like on a scope. Went to both eyes open and improved to shoot an 11 / 25. That was a tie with the other chap shooting, so it just goes to show it was not all my fault, the weather was a factor <_< There has only been one chap who has shot a 25/25 so far so it is not an easy course.

The other thing was that being over the sea it has to be non-toxic shot only. This worked out fine and used Gamebore White Gold Pro Steel in #9 shot 24g @ 1400fps. When it did hit the clays they broke fine. I can't comment on the difference to lead as there is no one shooting lead at the range. The owner had to get the #9 24g from Gamebore directly as the don't often do that size shot, the usual is 7 1/2.

Jolly good fun and hope to get plenty more rounds in.

Cheers,

Sam

Sounds like a good session

Not sure about the non-toxic shot though <_< you must have some seriously deep diving birds up there

Stupid law created by ignoramus's

Indeed, but as the steel are actually cheaper than lead at the moment we don't really mind

About £100 a thou at the moment.

Holly **** you really are at the end of the earth! best not tell my wife there's a range there, she was obsessed with moving up that way.

Regarding steal shot, i think people have posted on here that the distances in skeet mean that steel shot works quite well.

Keep plugging at it, next time don't do any doubles, just concentrate on building up the sight picture for each stand. Then when you're hitting more than you miss try the doubles. <_<

EDIT: Try this book http://www.play.com/Books/Books/4-/736106/...;searchsource=0 , an excellent read for sporting ranges and some good tps for practicing skeet and DTL.

Yup we are kind of, err, isolated up here. Not sure why anyone would want to move here, its cold, very windy and there was sod all to do until the skeet range opened <_<

I think next time, weather permitting, I am going to try shooting each stand until I can judge the distances. I shot best on stands 1 -3, probably because that was facing downwind and I didn't have salt spray in my face!

But, I can recommend up here for break, the weather is really good in the late summer/autumn. September was lovely.

Just waiting to hear from Northern about my SGC interview then I can go shopping looking for a skeet gun (probably a cheap o/u first, I'm skint right now!)

The other chap shooting was quite impressed with the steel, he thought they were quite a bit faster than 1200fps lead.
