what parts are FAC and what aren't?

Recommended Posts

hi guys,

what reloading components are regulated by FAC and what gun parts are likewise? For instance, I have 550 hold and 500 buy for my 223 in ammunition. Does extra brass, bullets, or primers count against my allotment?

Also, do I have to have a cartridge on my cert to buy/possess brass for it? In the near future I will have a 17 ackley hornet. But I'll have to buy 22 hornet brass to start with and form it. Will a shop sell that to me or am I going to have to find 17 AH brass?

What gun parts are regulated? Obviously receivers, likely barrels. I wouldn't think that stocks are.

Any place where this is listed that I haven't found it?

Thanks,

Rick

Brass, primers and powder do not count, expanding heads do.

Gun wise any pressure bearing part, I.E action barrel and bolt, a barrel blank does not count until it is chambered.

You can buy any brass as long as it is unloaded, 17ah brass is available in the states, get it imported may be a problem.

answered above

Good choice on the .17ackley hornet, currently looking for a donor action for .17ah myself, have you priced the smith work??

paul,

Thanks for the info. I guess that would put choke tubes on a certificate also.

I'd order a barrel for my encore. I have a 223 barrel from MGM on it now. It has a trigger job from EABCO that I would class as the nicest trigger I have on any gun I've shot. I haven't measured it but I'd put it in the 1.5 lb range and super smooth. I would have no problem picking up an MGM barrel for it in AH. For a blued barrel they run $350, $395 for stainless.

No biggie on the importation problems. I make fairly frequent trips to the states as does my wife, plus our families still live there. I'm ordering some 223 brass this week that I'll bring back when we go home at the end of the month for a wedding (thus my question). However, 17 AH brass is a lot more expensive than buying 22 hornet brass.

Thanks,

Rick

Yes i see now, with the encore it's a much easier job, and state side barrels are available no probs, you might want to check out dies to neck the case down to .17 whilst your back at home, as they will no doubt be a lot cheaper, as will fl or neck size dies.

Strangely choke tubes are not on certificate, yet are pressure bearing :good:

Hi Paul,

Almost all of my major purchases are stateside. 'Cept for electronics of course...

I'm not in a push for the 17 hornet. I have an HMR that I really like already. However, I was thinking of doing a 1:1 swap on my certificate from the HMR to hornet. Then I have the ability to load the hornet down to HMR levels or crank it up. Either way it would be about the same price or cheaper than buying HMR shells and I'd get an even better shooting gun (not that my HMR isn't a good shooter).

Thanks

Rick

Getting brass from the US is no problem - if anyone wants a contact just pm me. Prices for once fired run around £12-15 per 100 delivered to your door.

Barrels and triggers are different. You need an export licence to get them out of the US and to try to do so without the required paperwork could result in a jail term.

Anything is easy to import yourself but require an import licence and a FAC with facility to acquire whatever you wish to import. The UK licence is free but involves some hassle in actually getting it. US export licences can take from 3 weeks to 12 months to obtain and there seems to be no reason why any one takes longer than another. BUT a US dealer such as Brownells or Cabelas who require numerous licences on a daily basis do get them at least 10x quicker than the individual will. So if possible buy from a dealer who exports rather than an individual you may well not want the hassle .
