25.06 rem

Recommended Posts

hi guys

I,ve been considering getting a 25.06 rem as a foxing/deer rifle but it,s not a very common calibre here in Ireland the .243 rem being much more popular. It can shoot up to 120g bullets which might make it better for some of the bigger red/sika hybrids in my area.

Is this calibre used much in the uk and what,s the general opinion of it as a fox/deer round?

thanks

It's a pretty fast round. Because of this I think barrel life is not as good as it would be on a .243, but if you're not target shooting that's unlikely to be a problem for a long time. I know a guy who shoots one and loves it. It will have a nice flat trajectory for Foxing. If I'm not mistaken they have a bit of a loud bark too, like most of the necked down -06s :good:

It's a great round, far more whack than .243 and will flatten anything that walks in the UK.

It isn't very confortable to use for multiple shots on a range for instance, but you probably wouldn't want to do that.

Can be a bit lively in light actioned guns, yet again we saw a T3 lite in 25.06 give an unsuspecting user a snipers eye at Bisley yesterday :good:

So, my advice would be to get one, but look at heavier barreled or stocked versions of rifles, they make more accurate rifles anyway.

Make sure you can get ammo locally, or look at realoding, some shops still class it as a wildcat and don't stock them.

Hello i have a 25/06 in a 695 tika with a T8 mod & it's just like my 243 i used to have i have put 6 people onto this round for it's extra punch at open hill reds & its heavier bullet weight.I find it no diffrent in recoil with the mod to that of a moded 243 & i home load it & am on 100g sp just now but have used the 75 v-max/Speer TNT 87g & the winchester/nosler 115g lub-box silver tip stuff with fantastic results & find it a great caliber which is on the rise with it's good versitilatie.

I had a 25-06 for a couple of years. It was a Ruger No.1 V - fantastic accuracy (0.3 moa) but I was never happy with its performance on deer. I found the 100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips gave too much carcase damage on Fallow deer even out at 350 yards. The 115 grain Ballistic Tips were ok but lacked expansion at distance. I know there is no "super-bullet" that can give perfect performance at different striking velocities but I never really got on with the 25-06.

A mate has an identical gun and uses it on foxes with the 85 gr Hornady V-Max. Devastating but overkill. It is also really accurate despite the fact that his barrel has had over 2500 rounds through it.

Recoil wise - if you stick a can on the barrel the 25-06 is sweet to shoot.

Its "horses for courses" - you'll either love or hate the 25-06. I personally think there are better calibres out there. Incidentally I went back to my 243 and replaced the 25-06 with a 308.
