Wonderful piece of stalking

Was driving around the farm today checking out the rape fields for pigeons . I saw about a dozen pigeons feeding close up to the hedge on the headland underneath a mature oak tree . One of my favourite decoying spots .

Whilst watching through my glasses i saw one of the farm cats stalking along the hedgerow towards the pigeons .I thought to myself no ,he will never get close enough . It was a real treat to watch him bellying along the hedgerow towards the pigeons . He got closer and closer and i found that i was holding my breath in case i spooked the birds ,although i was 300 yards away sitting in the disco . He managed to get within about 10 feet of the pigeons and then shuffled himself into a crouched postion .I watched as he made the most spectacular leap at the pigeons and grabbed one as they all took to the wing ,i have never seen so many feathers coming off a pigeon before .I had to sit and admire his field craft and thought to my self what a wonderful stalk . Harnser .

somtimes it is just good to sit and watch .

i have just notice that i am turning into sweepy when i go out with the dogs for a walk.

am always looking for pigeons in fields now. and when i see them am counting them in my head.

but unlike sweepy i dont pretend to shot them with my imaginary shotgun when they are startle.

We have a virtually feral moggy, the offspring of many generations of burly farm cats. It seems to loathe humans, and spends most of its time out stalking its supper. I would be thankful if I could hone my fieldcraft skills to even half of that which our cat has. I've watched it take pigeons, and rabbits. The cat once blithely trotted past me out in the yard, carrying a big buck rabbit that it had bitten through the spine. Cats make stalking look effortless.
