pigeon master
Hello fellow NPPC members, just checking if anyone is getting any good bags, I have not chance to get out because of major work going on in the house, also my new springer pup is taking the rest of my time. the little buggar needs to go out about 10 times a day to stop her from crapping in the house but she's getting there. Thought I would just touch base and see what was happening. Good luck and happy woody shooting The PM
Dutchman
Hi Pigeon master, Talking about good bags??? Went out saturday, spend six hours in the field and missed not a single woody!! Totall of pigeons shot.........ONE They really don't fly in this heat ( its over 30 degrees Celsius in Holland) (apologize for the poor English)
pigeon master
Hi Dutchman, they dont fly much over here in that sort of heat. Lets hope for some bright cooler days with a good breeze and we'll all be in business and bagging them in the hundreds. I'm still waiting for some of the rape fields to be cut up North so I'm hoping I get some good weather when that happens. Theres one thing for sure though Dutchman and thats you will have gained a little more knowledge of these birds, we all learn a little more on every outing we have, I do and if I have a bad day I always take my camera and get some good photos of the wildlife. Atleast I get a few shots off either way. Good luck on your next session. The PM
Teal
Hi dutchman - welcome to the forum! It was my understanding that virtually all shooting has been banned in Holland. I appreciate pigeons are a pest but apparently even corvids like crows are now protected, as such I'm quite suprised that the pigeons don't at the very least have an extensive closed season, with those looney greens power sharing. Dutchman
Hello Teal, Sadly enough you are right. The left-wing members of our parliament pushed a law trough in 2002 that declares all animals in Holland protected. We are only allowed to shoot the wild ducks (those are the ones with the green headed male and the brown female, in English they are called mallards I think), woodpigeons, pheasants, hares, and rabbits. The hunting season on these species starts on august 15 and ends at januari the 31th. Except for the hares and pheasants ( 15 oct. until 31 dec.) Now, two years later we have had a small political change. The result is that rabbits and woodpigeons are, under certain circumstances, allowed to shoot during the whole year. This is because the governement (of the distict in which a farmer has his farm) must pay for the damage to the crops. For the same reason are, since a few months, crows and jackdaws no longer protected. However there is a bright side to this all............. Whenever you come to Holland you don't have to be affraid for the Dutch hunters.. Teals are protected also over here

Teal
And am I correct in thinking you can't rear pheasants or partridges? And no vermin control since foxes can't be shot?
Dutchman
You are right, when someone owns a phaesant or partridge is must have a ring around its leg. If it hasn't you are committing an offence. You must pay a fine and even worse, you probably lose your hunting-licence for several years. For what concerns the foxes; they still can be shot (the only problem is that it isn't allowed)
pigeon master
Hi Dutchman, I have spent some time in Holland myself and found that the wildlife over there was on the bleak side. Not much of it about is what I mean. I maybe wrong but that was my observation, is this the reason for clamping down on shooting? What are your views, I could be wrong but they could be looking at increasing the population of various species with shooting bans. Dutchman
Hi Pigeon Master, It depends on where you are in Holland. My brother rents a "huntingarea' close to where I live near the coast. In his field you can find several species of geese in large numbers, many brown hares ( about two on every hectare), ducks, partridges, woodpigeons and snipes. There are also many other birds like coots, moorhens, teals, lapwings, gulls, stockdoves etc. Last week he shot with his mate 72 woodys in three hours time on a flightine. His hunting area is about 120 hectares (I don't know if the English use hectares for area measuring so; one hectare is 100x100 meters) Where I rent my huntingarea I have counted until now; 6 hares, 12 ducks, hundreds of woodpigeons, no geese and hundreds, of what we call, parrots (birds of prey). My hunting area is larger than 900 hectares and is placed in the center of Holland. Even the politicans with a little brain now finaly understands that hunting has only a little impact on the wildlife. I hate to say it, because originally I am a farmers son, but I am affraid that the way in whitch Dutch farmers are working there fields is causing the poor wildlife in certain areas over here. They use every millimeter of land and leave almost nothing behind. A stubble field often looks like it was vacuumcleaned.
P.Shuter
Hi PM One of my friends had a 170+bird day near Thornboro' this afternoon!!
pigeon master
I must have been mistaken, maybe the area I was in. Miles of flat fields with no features with drainage ditches seperating them. P S sounds like a great day to me, I could do with one of them myself. Teal
Can you freely use pigeon decoys? I have some friends over there, if they are allowed I will definitely try and take over a flapper and some shells and try it out. Are maggots and other live baits banned when fishing? Dutchman
Hello Teal, Since we have got a new law called 'The Flora & Fauna Law' nobody knows for sure wat is legal and wat isn't. This goes for the farmers, the hunters, the anglers and also the police. This new law declares all animals protected and is very difficult for the common man to understand. It is also filled with contradictions. Last year they were building a new road. Unfortunately, there was a coot in a nest with eggs in the way. The roadworkers were not allowed to go on. After two weeks they've got permission to replace the nest to another location and they could go on with there work!!! A farmer whos crops are destroyed by geese is not allowed to clap his hands to scare them away because they may not be disturbed. No one knows if pigeon decoys are legal to use because of the contradictions in this new law. I myself give it the benefit off the doubt. So does all of my mates. You can use maggots as long as they are not coloured. Only the white/beige ones are allowed. You can't use living little fish for catching pikes. You must kill it first!! There is a €28,- fine for using worms before the first of july. As far as I know 3000 farmers either quit or leave Holland every year. The land they leave behind often is declared protected and turned into recreation areas for the citypeople or its gonna be used for building more houses. Don't let all of this happen to you....
